Distinguished Catecr D:. -MARY. ‘SCHARLINB; "who died in London last month’ ‘at the age of 85, was one of the first women to enter the medical profession. °:~ While in India with her husband she was deeply impressed by the need for medical work among Indian women, and qualified’ as a doctor at Madras Medical College. Later she took several degrees at London University, and was soon recognised as one of the foremost ‘women doctors. In addition to a long list of academic distinctions, Dame Mary Scharlieb was a distinguished writer on social and medical problems. Moreover, she was a devoted mother to her children, and found time for a great deal of ¢charitable and church work. She was always very feminine and dressed beautifully. For her services in the war, Dr. Scharlieb was made a Commander’ of. the Order of the British Empire, and later became Dame Commander" of the Order. She never spared herself, and was at work almost to the last day of her serene and .noble life.
