Radio in Egypt
Only Private Stations. ‘BROADCASTING in Egypt is limited to a few transmissions of gramophone records by radio dealers owning small transmitters. Nevertheless, there is in the land of the Pharaohs a vivid interest for radio, although the nearest station situated at Stamboul, Turkey, is situated 2080 miles away. This Turkish transmitter is regarded with pride by the major portion of the Hgyptian listeners as their "local station." Other stations listened to are Charkow and Moscow, while of the West Buropean transmitters, Berlin, Vienna, Breslau, Radio-Toulouse, RadioParis, Rome and Naples, are favourite stations. . : Multi-valve sets more often than not equipped with screen grid valves are used chiefly for reception, but special short-wave receivers are. extremely popular in certain circles. ‘ Most Egyptians manifest little interest in radio broadcasting, but the younger generation, through visiting Buropean schools, are beginning to realise the values and possibilities of radio. Reception in the desert is not as poor as would be imagined, for many distant stations can be splendidly received without interference.
