Evolution of Railway

UST 100 years have elapsed since the opening of the ManchesterLiverpool railway, and in this time there have been great developments in this means of locomotion. This will be the subject of a talk at 8YA on Monday, September 15, the speaker being Mr. H. R. Farr, of the Traffic Department of the Railways, Christehurch. Forty-nine years prior to that, George Stephenson was born, and it wus in 1814 that his first locomotive attained a speed of six miles an hour: Fifteen years later, in 1829, his famous "Rocket" travelled at the rate of 25 to 35 miles an hour, and obtained a prize of £500 offered by the directors of the Livérpool-Manchester railway company for the best locomotive. That was practically the beginning of railways, and what has happened since will be the subject of Mr. Farr’s talk.
