Desert Radio Stations
For Travellers in Distress "THE time when travellers marooned in the desert will be able to summon assistance by means of émergency telephone or telegraph .boxés is suggested by the news of the early establishment of a wireless network in the Libyan desert. According to present plans, shortwave stations working on
a fixed wavelength and capable of op eration by unskilled persons are to be erected at the principal oases, for, communication with radio headquarters at Cairo. Whether telegraphy or telephony shall be employed has yet to be decided, If the former were adopted it is probable that unskilled operators would be able to transmit the necessary distress call merely by turning a handle, which, would actuate a relay.
