[GNORAMUS: The Sardonyx pronounced Sar-do-nyx, with the ac cent on the first syllable), is an- ony, containing layers of sard. Sard is a variety of quartz, like carnelian, but of very deep red colour, blood red by transmitted light. Both the sardonyx and the onyx belong to the agate family, which is popularly supposed to be the birth stone for the month of June. The sardonyx most valued by the ancients was that composed of alternate layers: of black, white, and red, considered to be the symbolical of faith, purity, and martyrdom.
