SPANISH CAKE WITH BOILED ICING
The prize of 5/- this week goes to Marvy Silver for the following recipe, which sounds most attractive:-- ‘ % cup shortening, \ 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 12 cups flour, 3 teaspoons baking powder. 1 teaspoon cinnamon, % cup milk. : Cream the shortening, add sugar and the yolks of e ¢3, and beat wel]. Sift the flour together with the baking powder and the cinnamon, add to the other ingredients alternately with the milk. Finally, fold in the beaten white of eggs and bake in greased pan in moderate oven 35 to 40 minutes. For the icing, boil togéther without stirring one cup of granulated sugar and half a cup of water until the syrup spins a thread. Pour in very slowly the stiffly-beaten white of one egg and beat until smooth; add half a teaspoon of vanilla essence and one teaspoon of baking powder, and allow to stand a few minutes before spreading. For a change a teaspoon of cocoa can be added and to decorate with walnuts adds greatly to the appearance of this cake, ° naaanae oka... ...... _.
