"WESTWARD, HO" From 1YA. T 7 o’clock Mr. H. H. Driver will give his fortnightly Book Review, and at 7.40 pm. Mr. L. A. Bady will give the first of two talks, "Chats About Musical Instruments." This talk is really a history of man’s efforts. to produce instrumental music and should prove interesting to everyone. Included in ‘the orchestral numbers is the "Light Cavalry" overture with xylophene obbligato, to be played by Mr. Roy Brinsden, the versatile drummer of the 1YA Orchestra. ‘There will also be a cornet solo by Mr, W. Shepey, A new vocalist to 1YA in the person of Iir. Rex Hart, tenor, will appear. He is singing "Spirito Gentil’ (from "La Favorita’’), "The Night has a Thousand Eyes," and "My Zither." Miss Marian Irving will provide some excellent humorous: items. ‘The Celeste Trio is making a reappearance in various vocal numbers, chief of which will be excerpts from "Westward Ho," by Roeckel. (The story of "Westward Ho" runs somewhat as follows: The women of a little seaport town watch the fisher-
men depart. Morning wears on, with the playing of the children and the gossip of the wives on shore. Suddenly a girl breaks in with the news that gipsies are approaching. The womén gather round the gipsies while they sing and dance on the: village green. Evening draws on, with signs ‘of a coming storm. The two daughters of the lighthouse keeper light the lamps and watch. With nightfall a storm rises, and the people meet to pray in a church on the cliffs in sight and sound of the sea, and many 2 mother in humble home sings prayerfully to soothe her child. The Angels sing a song of comfort and peaceGod’s answer falls on the little town, and with morning the fishermen are once more safe at home.) The evening’s programme , will conclude with dance music at 11 p.m, From 2YA. A W.H.A. lecture at 2YA by Mr. A. D. Munro, M.Se, on "What is Chemical Analysis?" The evening’s programme will mark the anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare and St. George’s Day. It will be Shakespearean as regards both instrumental and vocal music and spoken matter. The programme, which is a very comprehensive one, will include the presentation of scenes from various plays with recitals and dialogues. The artists giving this : programme are, with the exception of the Orchestrina (which will lend support with musical numbers) and Professor Von Zedlitz, all members of the newlyformed Dickens-Shakespearean Society. Professor G. W. Von Zedlitz, who is known throughout New Zealand’ as a brilliant student of languages, will give a short talk on "Shakespeare" during this programme. Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, debater and a student of English literature, will briefly introduce each item before its presentation, ° From 3YA. HE main portion of 3YA’S programme will be devoted to the presentation of excerpts from the comic opera "Dorothy." The vocalists will be Miss Frances Hamerton, Miss Belle Renaut. Mr. Russell Sumner, and Mr, JT, D. Williams. Contributing to the supporting programme will be Miss Marjorie Alexander (pianiste) and the Studio Instrumental Octet.
