Haydn Recordings

MANY beautiful excerps from the Haydn compositions are _ recorded by fine artists and combinations of artists. Many of these records will be broadcast during the evening at 1YA and listeners who have not a selection from the works of this great composer will hear gems that might well grace their collection. As many of the recordings are quartettes the electric gramophone will show up to advantage, for the viola and ’cellos can be brought out faithfully only by the electric reproducer. Among the recordings are the following, many of which will be presented from 1YA:- .+ "Wmperor Quartette," pluyed by BHlman String Quartette-H.M.V. D.B. 1055. A particularly good recording, in which all the feeling of melancholly and yearning of the composer is brought out. The theme is played by the first violin (Elman himself), which gives way to the viola and ’cello as the variations.are introduced. In a beautiful passage the first violin soars into its uppermost notes and is followed up by the second violin, the ’cello and

then the viola. The end comes as the four instruments descend into the lower registers, there to harmonise in a cadence, and then fade out. This is the Austrian hymn that Haydn played as a pianofore solo on his deathbed. On the reverse side is another recording of the Elman quartette, "Andante Cantabile" (Tchaikovsky), a composition that is equal in beauty to the Haydn hymn. The Flonzaley Quartette, a famous H.M.V. combination, have recorded on D.B.250 two movements from. the "Quartette in D major" and on D.B.837 two movements. from the "Quartette in G major."

The "Quartette in D minor" is recorded by the Elman Quartette in two records, D.B.1146-7. The Buda Pest String Quartette have recorded’ the "Quartette in G"’ on 1075-7, while the "Rondo in ©" ("Gipsy Rondo") is presented by the Virtuoso String Quartette. This latter will be played by the Studio Trio during the Haydn evening at 1YA. Two excerps from the "Creation" are a soprano solo, "With Verdure Clad," sung by Florence Austral (D 775), and a bass solo by Radford, "Rolling on the Foaming Billows." These will be played over the air during the evening.-
