Electric Ocean Liners to Carry 450 Passengers

ONSTRUCTION of two 600-foot electrically driven passenger liners, the first of their kind for trans-oceanic service, will begin soon in the yards of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Virginia, for the Dollar Steamslijp Line. They will be sister ships, /of twin screw design and built for a speed of twenty knots. Each will accommodate 450 passengers and a crew of more than 800. For general cargo there will be 632,000 cubic feet of storage space, in addition to 67,000 cubic feet of refrigerating space for perishable cargo. The power plant of each vessel will consist of two steam turbines driving two: alternating current generators. ‘These generators will supply electric current to drive two 13,250-horse-power motors, each connected to one of the propeller shafts. Virtually all auxilliary plants of the vessels, such as those for heating and = refrigeration, will be electrified.
