Spreading Christmas Cheer

Commercial Travellers Make Busy

SHORT while ago a special appeal was made from 2YA on behalf of the Christmas cheer fund of the Wellington Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association. Listeners will remember the address given by a blind soldier in connection with an appeal for support for the C.T.’s worthy appeal. The aim of this admirable body is to provide Christmas cheer for the unfortunate, who, but for their efforts, would see Christmas pass without any celebration. This association has a particularly warm spot for children and homes, orphanages, and children’s institutions annually receive their attention. Not that the philanthropic work of the association stops there, but that is another story. The Allocation of the Money. Tas year a big sum has been collected, and Friday last it was distributed. Following is a list of the institutions which received assistance :--

‘TH money was handed over with one and only stipulation, that it be spent on Christmas cheer-no. matter whether for sweets, balloons, clothes, or any fancy of those concerned.

Large Number Served. OMBE idea of the number of ¢hildren whose Christmas has been gladdened by this splendid appeal, can be received from the numbers given in a few instances. ; At the Presbyterian Girls’ Home, there are 46, while at the Boys’ Home there are 61. The Home of Compassion, visited during the afternoon, gives shelter to a very large number, some 200 in all, there being representatives of all colour, creed, and age. Yet, all receive the kind and persistent attention known only to those who are members of that institution. All, young and old, crippled and healthy, bedridden and strong, received their welcome guests with a happy smile of appreciation, knowing that. their more fortunate friends outside had not forgotten them who were less fortunate. Glad Welcome. ‘THE Salvation Girls’ Home was visited during school hours, and on entering, the visitors were respectfully greeted by a class of "Brownies," for all were‘ neatly dressed in brown. A song of welcome; then the visitors spoke to the little ones just a word of Christmas cheer, but it was a weighty word-so the little ones thought. At the Children’s Hospital. | (BEAT preparations were being made at the children’s hospital. A Christmas tree, packed with surprises, a big boat, and a hundred pleasant little reminders that Christmas was close at hand were planned. Deft fingers had been at work preparing for the festive season, and when the representatives of the Commercial Travellers came along with their gift, or, rather, the gift of the public, for which they had toiled so unceasingly, they were greeted with many a happy, shining face, Funds usually are at an ebb at Christmas, and then so many little ones to brighten, so. that the cheque would be more than welcome. It was an eventful day, and a happy one; happy for those who had worked so hard to make Christmas Christmas indeed.
