All Blacks' Tour
Question of Re-Broadcasts GPORT-LOVERS were very loth to resign themselves tu the fact that it was impossible to rebroadcast descriptions of the All Blacks matches in South Africa, and the Broadcasting Company was repeatedly written to suggesting that it should be done, this despite the fact that it had been announced that such rebroadcasts were impossible. — ; Even recently, just before the last Test match, the company received a letter from a listener, who stated that he knew of instances of 2BL Sydney having been tuned in when rebroadecasting a South African short-wave’ station, which was describing a match in which the All Blacks were playing. One of his informants even heard the whistle! The correspondent knew that no South African stations reach New Zeaand, and the possibility presented itself to him that perhaps rebroadcasts could be carried out around the other two sides of the triangle. Though incredulous regarding the rumours,.the Broadcasting Company communicated with the New South Wales Broadcasting Company to ascertain what really the New Zealand listener had heard, The reply was an emphatic repudiation of the suggestion that it was a rebroadcast of a South African station, such being an impossibility. _ It would be interesting to know what the New Zealand listener did hear. It may be mentioned again that the Broadcasting Company made all inquiries, when the South African tour was arranged, as to the prospect of rebroadeasting the matches, It had seriously in view then a plan to send its own announcer. The inquiries, however, soon showed that the scheme was impracticable.
