A RECORD GATE!
A CHRISTCHURCH INCIDENT DISAPPOINTED LISTENERS. N the morning of Saturday, June 28, 8YA received a surprise in the fourm of a notification from the Canterbury Rugby Union that it did not desire that afternoon's football match to be broadcast. It was an eleventh hour intimation. An announcement had been made the previous evening, and the programmes as appearing in the morning newspapers advertised the broadcast. The people were expecting the broadeast, and it was an important ‘match. Here was a case in which all ‘the harm that a broadcast could do by keeping people away had been done. It looked as if the union would serve no good purpose by thus eancelling the broadeast at the last minute. At the time the match was to start, 3YA went on the air and explained that there would be no Rugby broadcast, in deference to the wishes of the union. ‘There was much disappointment among people in the city and countryside who could not attend the match and who enjoyed listening-in. And what was the attendance at the match like? It was a record!
