"Cavalleria Rusticana" at 1YA
The melody of Mascagni’s famous intermezzo to "Cavalleria Rusticana," which is to be peoduced at 1YA on Tuesday evening, is perhaps the most cetebrated and fam¥iar in all music. When the opera "Cavalleria Rusticana" was first ‘produced, the world of music was described as having "Mascagnitis." Its reception in every land was wildly enthusiastic, and it remains the most popular of the short operas. t
The studio production of the passionate Sicilian love tragedy will occupy the major portionof the programme on Tuesday at 1YA and’ will be produced under the direction of Madame Irene Ainsley. ‘The members of fhe cast will be Miss Nancye Hanna, Miss Mary Hamilton, Mr. Arthur Ripley and Mr. Walter Brough. Assisting Madame Ainsley’s Quartet will be the popular Bosworth-Hemus-Towsey Trio, whose items will include selections from "Tannuanser.? Mr. Cyril ‘Towsey will play "Ballade in A Flat," by Chopin. In addition to presenting ‘Cavalleria Rusticana," the various members of Madame Ainsley’s Quartet will also render a number of hallads, while Madame Ainsley herself will be heard in the great operatic aria, "O Don Fatale" (from "Don Carlos’) and ‘’The Lost Chord."" Orchestral music will be relayed from the Majestic The- | atre, where the orchestra is uncer the conductorship of Mr. J. White-ford-Waugh.
Wednesday evetiing’s programme consists of a relay of the Municipal Organ Recital from the Auckland Town Hall, Mr. Maughan Barnett being the organist. From the studio items will be rendered by the popular HazellSutherland Duo, and Miss Lynda Murphy, the well-known soubrette. Miss zell’s items will include ‘‘He Was Despised,’"? fram -'The Messiah" (by Handel), ani "Little Holes in Heaven’ (by Hope); while Mr. Frank Sutherland’s resonant voic2 will be heard in "The Lute Player" and ‘The Blue Dragoons." ‘Their duets are ‘‘Won’t You Buy" and "Dear Love of Mine." "Special Messenger" and "If You Knew Muvver’ are the sketches to be performed by Miss Lynda Murphy. Mr. Barry Coney’s Quartet will be the main contributors to ‘Thursday’s programme. Their quartet- numbers will include ‘"Take Care, Take Care," by Bartholomew," and ‘The Slavonic Cradle Song," by Dvorak. The members of the quartet are Miss Lola Solomon, Miss Martha Williamson, Mr. Samuel -Duncan and Mr. Barry Coney, and these artists will be heard in a variety of popular songs and ballads. Mr. Barry Coney’s own numbers include ‘"Marishka, Marishka’"’ (by Korbay), and "A Yeoman’s Yarn" (by _ Gheel). | Those popular and well-known enter- tainers, The Asquiths, will, on Thursday, once again delight listeners with their 30 minutes’ drawing-room entertainment, introducing a number of songs and novelties. The Bosworth-Hemus-Towsey Trio’s items include "9nd Movement of the Trio in B flat," by Schubert, and ‘Three Fours," by Coleridge-Taylor, and Miss Ina Bosworth will render Wilhelmj’s ‘Ave Maria." Friday’s programme will include Mad. ame Mary YTowsey’s quartet, comprising Miss Gwenyth Evans, Madauie Mary Towsey, Mr. John Bree and Mr. Reginald Newberry. These artists will contribute a variety of quartets, duets, and solos, including ‘Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," ‘Love is Meant to Make us Glad® (from ‘Merrie Eng-
land"), and "Softly Fall the Shades of Evening." The popular Snappy Three will include among their — concerted items, ‘‘My Sighing Siamese,"’ ‘‘Diatte,"’ and "Yhere’s a trick "in Pickin’ a Chicken To-day." A selection from "The Flying Dutchman" (by Wagner) and the "Finale" of the Trio in B Flat, by Schubert, will be among the items to be played by the Bosworth-Hemus-Towsey Trio, whilst Squire’s ‘"Melodie"’ will be played by. Miss Lalla Hemus.
The welicknown elccutionist, Mr. J. FEF. Montague, will, on Friday, once again delight iisteners with a series of items, among which will be ‘Honesty is the best Policy," and a character sketch, ‘Fagin," by Dickens. On Saturday the well-known Lyric Four will contribute the major portion of the evening’s programme, their concerted numbers including "Reverie" (by Storch), and "Song of the Volga Boatmen." Mr. Arthur Ripley’s items will include "A Dream,’ while Mr. Ernest ‘Thomas’ bass solos are "Off to Vhiladelphia,’ and a "Banjo Song." Mr. Alan McElwain will provide the hufiorous side of the prograrame, ‘Doreei" (by Dennis) bemg among his numbers. The studio concert will be followed by a relay of dance music from Dixieland Cabaret, by the well-known Internation. als, under Mr. Clyde Howley.
