UNCLE SAM'S BIRTHDAY

On Saturday afternoon, January 14, Uncle Sam, of 8YA, in fnll regaliagoatee beard, chimney-pot hat, clawhammer coat, striped pants, and the inevitable c:gar, but with a New Zealand flag im hatband and buttonholepresented some six hundred prizes at the annual children’s picnic of Washineton (Men’s) and Naiomi (Women’s) Oddfellow Lodges, held at the heautiful \ddineton Trotting Grounds, Christehuich. Nearly £10 worth of tovs were ‘lisposed of, those remainine over after the pienic heing sent to children absent throne) sickness. Tnele Sam was tmotered to the grounds by Mr. W. H. Simmons, secretary of the Men’s Lodge, and wos assisted in the prize distribution by Mrs. W. TI. Simmons, secretary of the Women’s Lodge. A trinmphal entry to the grounds was made with the assistance of three Scottish pipers. The weather was fine, ard Unele Sam’s nieces and nephews spent a happy day. Incidentally, it was Unele Sam’s birthday, and he thoroughly enjoyed his little party. -A
