A 1YA COMPLAINT
"THE MESSIAH" RELAY | -- The, Radio Broadcasting Company of New Zealand has been unjustly taken to task in a section of the Auckland Press for not undertaking to relay the second nigitt’s ‘Messiah’ concert by the Auckland Chorat¥ Society on December 17, -Yhe company, however, was faced with a difficulty which, through. the terms laid down by the Choral Sp.’ ciety, rendered it impossible to undertake, ‘without the risk of drsappoimting the listeners, The Chorai Society offered to permit the Broadecasting Company to relay the second night’s perfermance, previding that the takings -on the first night of the ora‘orig reached £230. The Broadcasting Company’s programmes must be compiled four weeks ahead for Press publicity purposes, but, in accordance with the Choral Society’s cenditiens, it wonld not be pessibte to knew, nntif the night before the praposed relay, whether it would take place. If the company had gambled on the prospects, and had announced that the telay would take place, widespread complaint and criticism wouht have resulted had it been found impossible to put on the relay. Individual concert performers, to fill the gap, could not be -fornd at such brief no-. tice, and artists will not accept en‘gagements contingent upon 2a relay not being available.
