SHORT-WAVE RECEPTION

NOTES BY MR. SELLENS. The past week has not been: as‘good as usual for short-wave telephony reception, but I have added to my list, which is now 651 stations,’ all except two, below 50 metres, tore On Saturday KDKA was very faint, while 2XAD was not heard; 2 A(U) 2, Wanganui, 2HM, New South Wales, were heard testing, and RFN, Russia, was up to its usual good form. Again on Sunday KDKA was weak, atid closed down earlier than usual. 2XAF was only just audible. Q2AY, Wellington, 8\Q, Westport, 8AU and 3AJ, Rangiora (both these amateurs are ‘fon the air’? almost every evening), 7CW, Hobart, working 2YG, and 2AT, Wellington, were also heard, ~ I tried for 2NM, Marcuse, and heard a voice very faintly on his wave-length, but too weak to understand what was said. ANE, Java, was heard on Monday morning till 7.80 a.m., playing gramophone records at good strength and modulation. Not any announce« ment heard. During the evening 4NW, Queens land, 2-, Goulburn, N.S.W., and a station on about 80 metres either signing or calling 4AQ0, Dunedin, were heard. Reception was very unsteady durin the evening on account of the strong wind swinging the "lead in." 8\U0 and 8AJ, Rangiora, 4AR, Gore, 4NW, Brisbane, 2MG, New, South Wales, aud REN, Russia, were heard on Tuesday ever ing. On Wednesday morning from 6.10 till 7.830 am. ANE, Java, was heard at good speaker strength giving vocal and orchestral items, with several announces ments in Dutch, calling Africa, India, and Holland. On account of being out till late, I was only listening for a few minuteg after 11 p.m., and heard 8BG, Viow toria and 6AG, Perth; the latter statiort put on several records, which came through well. He announced that he is testing almost every evening at 6 o’clock (10.80 p.m., New Zealand summer time). On Thursday evening 8BL, calling 8BQ, 2M testing on about 32 metres, RIN, 6AG, and a station on about 81 metres calling 2WC, New South Wales, were heard. __

Un riday morning ANI, java, was heard at good strength for a few minutes giving an orchestral item. arly, in the evening 2XAF, New York, was still on the air. I tuned them in ‘at about 5.50 p.m., and heard some organ ‘music and soprano solos. A friend who gets home earlier than myself told me that this station is often on the air till 6 p.m. our time on Friday evenings; this is 12.30 a.m., Eastern Standard Time. ‘The volume was not so loud as I expected, as it usually increases to fair speaker strength before 6.80 p.m. on Sundays when on the air, but this time was only just andible on the speaker.
