Thomas A. Edison celebrated the golden anniversary of the invention of the phonograph on August 12 at West Orange, N.J., U.S.A., by repeating over the radio, "Mary had a Little Lamb," the nursery jingle he recorded on the first talking machine fifty years ago, The electrical wizard appeared nerv~ ous and ill at ease as he stepped before the microphone for the second time, and in a low voice: "This is Edison speaking. This is Edison speaking. The first words I said to the original model phonograph was a little poem that went: Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow, And everywhere that Mary went The lamb was sure to go," A. few minutes later Mr. Edison was asked if he liked talking over the radio, His response was "No,"
