} |The expression, "Wait till the numbers go up,’ suffered much in prestige fast week swlien the races at Christ-| church were being broadcast. People throughout New Zealand, from the North Cape to the Bluff, heard the anwlouncer say at the etid of every race: ‘_"_ was first, -- second, and --. third." A moment later he said: ‘Che numbers are up and those names are correct."’ So everyone knew the winners before the numbers went up! ‘The announicer’s "thes’re off? always beat the sound of the bell. It took longer for the sound of the bell to reach the microphone than for the announcer’s voice to reach ‘a listener in North Auckland.
