The Timber Trade and Oregon.
It has been recognised that the trend of prices of imported timbers, and especially'of Oregon, has a direct bearing upon the market conditions for our domestic trade, and reference to the table of imports of timber from 1901 toT9"2i published on the following page will illustrate this.
As a means, therefore, of keeping before sawmillers a constant view of the probable trend of market conditions in New Zealand, it is intended that the Federation shall keep a close watch upon current quotations for and importations of Oregon, and figures relating to these will be published monthly for the information of members. In this way if excessive imports are threatened it is anticipated that miliers will be in a position to take prompt steps to meet the menace of cheap imports of low grades. This step is the more necessary in face of the fact that no adequate protection has been afforded our industry, such as is granted to other primary and secondary industries, or indeed, such as is granted by the Commonwealth to its timber industry. Reference to present prices is made in a later paragraph.
