N.Z.I.A. Examinations, 1921.
The following notes are published for the information of students and others who may be desirous of sitting this year for the examinations to be held early in December :
A.— Preliminary Examination.
This is the Matriculation Examination of the University of New Zealand and, in addition, the candidate will be required to pass a test in drawing from the round, of some feature, as an indication that elementary training in consideration or form in its three dimensions is essential. Students who have passed the Matriculation Examination and desire to qualify for this subject of drawing from the round, should make application to the Secretary of the Institute before August Ist next.
B.—First Professional.
The details of this examination are fully set forth in the “ Proceedings” (on page 61), and the only additional instruction needed being that the drawings for the two orders mentioned in the “ Testimonies of Study ” are to be on different sheets.
The “ Testimonies ” are to be sent, carriage paid, addressed to the Secretary, N.Z. Institute of Architects, / Woodward Street, Wellington, on or before October 31st, 1921.
C.—Second Professional
This examination is also fully explained in the “Proceedings” (page 61). The “Testimonies” are to be sent, carriage paid, to the Secretary, N.Z. Institute of Architects, 7 Woodward Street, Wellington, on or before October 31st, 1921.
D.—“ Intermediate ” Examination.
The “ Intermediate ” Examination is now done away with, and the work covered in this and the Final has been divided into three examinations, viz. : First Professional, Second Professional, and the Final. Those students who obtained a Partial Pass in the old “ Intermediate ” will only be required to complete the subject in which they previously failed. Students who gained a complete pass in the old “ Intermediate” may proceed direct to the “ Final ” as laid down in the new Syllabus.
E.—Final Examination.
Students entering for the “ Final ” Examination are recommended to carefully study the conditions as laid down in “Proceedings,” page 65. The design required may be in any suitable medium and rendering, and is to be properly mounted as detailed.
The final date for the reception of designs is September 30th, 1921. They must be sent, carriage paid, to the Secretary, N.Z. Institute of Architects, 7 Woodward Street, Wellington. The alternative subjects selected for this year are :
I.—A Town House.
lI.—A Town Hall and Council Chambers. The conditions of these alternative subjects are
as follows :
Subject I : “ A Town House, in one of the chief centres of the Dominion, for a retired Sheep Farmer.”
Site —A level section of |-acre in area having a frontage of 66 feet, to a main thoroughfare which runs east and west.
Requirements —Dining Room, Drawing Room, Entrance Hall, Study, Billiard Room, Kitchen and Offices, 5 Bedrooms, 2 Maid’s Rooms, Bathrooms and conveniences.
Drazvings —Site plan 32 feet to 1 inch. Plans or floors, sections and elevations necessary to explain the design, 8 feet to 1 inch. Sheet of typical details, exterior and interior, 2 feet to 1 inch. Perspective.
Subject II : “A Town Hall and Council Chambers in a small town of 15,000 inhabitants.”
Site- —The building is to occupy a dominating position in a public place semi-circular on plan, the base of which is 300 feet across running east and west. The centre of the semi-circular place is the highest point on the end of a spur with an even slope of I in 30 in the directions of east, north and west. From this centre radiate one road 100 feet wide running north and two roads 50 feet wide.
Requirements —Town Hall to seat 1,500 persons, Supper Room, Cloak Rooms, Conveniences, Council Chamber, Town Clerk’s Office and Office for his staff, Borough Engineer’s Office and Office for his staff, Mayor’s Room, Conveniences, two Committee Rooms and Caretaker’s Room.
Drawings Required —Site plan 32 feet to 1 inch, showing public place and general lay-out. Plans, Elevations and Sections, 16 feet to 1 inch. Perspective. Sheet of typical details of facade, 2 feet to 1 inch.
F.—Date of the Examinations.
The Examinations will be held in the principal centres early in December. The date will be settled and advertised about the end of- August. Candidates intending to sit must lodge their notices by October Ist.
G.—FEES.
The fees payable by a candidate on entering for any examination are :
