Personal.
The Council of the Institute of Architects regrets to record the death of one of its foundation members, Mr. John Currie, who passed away at his residence, Wood Street, Ponsonby, Auckland, at the age of 70. The late Mr. Currie was a native of Coleraine, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand in the ship “Queen of Nations” in 1874.
Mr. J. W. Rough, formerly of Invercargill, has returned to New Zealand and has commenced the practice of his profession in Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Rough went to England early in 1914, when it was Mr. Rough’s intention to sit for the RT.B.A. examination. The outbreak of war, however, interfered with this programme, and we find Mr. Rough serving first in the Anti-Aircraft branch of the Navy. He managed, however, to get through his examination for the R.1.8.A., and was then granted a commission in the Royal Engineers. After serving for a time as instructor in bridge building he subsequently served three years in France with a Field Company, specialising in reinforced concrete “pill-boxes.” He gained his Captaincy in the field. Mrs. Rough worked in the New Zealand Contingent Association’s canteen at Hornchurch throughout the war.
