Civic Improvements in Auckland.

The latest proposed scheme of city improvements is the construction of a new thoroughfare from Queen Street to Lome Street, running parallel

with Victoria and Wellesley Streets. The site chosen for the project is the block nearly opposite the Strand Arcade, formerly occupied by Messrs,. McCullough and Gower and later by John Court, Ltd. The scheme has reached the stage of the preparation of plans by Messrs. Grierson and Aimer, architects. The company that is responsible for the project proposes to traverse the area with a street flanked on either side by modern four-storey buildings, containing warehouse accommodation on the Lome Street frontage and shops and offices on the other portion. The plans show a total street frontage to these buildings of over 400 feet. It is proposed, as far as possible, to reserve the shops occupying the ground floor level for the sale of articles of special interest to women.

The estimated value of the projected improvements exceeds £IOO,OOO, but, owing to the existing leases, it will not be possible to commence the work until the beginning of next October. It is expected that the buildings will be completed within twelve months from the date of commencement.
