, HAMILTON. Building in Hamilton seems to be going ahead in leaps and bounds since tin' railway service has resumed normal running. During the .‘1 weeks ending in September the borough engineer, Mr. W. H. Stevens, issued permits for buildings estimated to cost over £47,000, which is a record for any one month. _ Nine shops are being erected at the corner of Ward and Victoria Streets, and the new premises for the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd., in Victoria Street, are nearly completed. In the same locality a large garage for Mr. H. ,11. Shaw is well under way. New offices for Messrs Rllis and Burnand are to be erected in Victoria Street, and the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Ltd., is having new premises built to house the increased staff rendered necessary by the amalgamation.

Other large works contemplated or in course of erection are additions to Messrs House and Baking’s shops, premises for the National Bank of New Zealand, a new Baptist church, and a very large number of private residences. In addition to these private works, the Borough Council is shortly taking a poll upon a £47,000 : electrical scheme, while early next year loan proposals for a £70,000 drainage scheme will be ready to be submitted to a poll. Allsop for a new Hospital ip brick for the Hospital Board. a U TE AWAMUTU. The Te Awamutu Borough Council have decided to purchase a site for a district war memorial at a cost of £2350. The site is a few yards back from the,main street, on the way to the Sports Ground, situated on a commanding corner, Avhich it is intended to lay out in plots, with a memorial pillar in the centre, and war trophies round the area. There is sufficient land to provide for the erection of municipal offices, library, and town hall, at a later date. WELLINGTON. A scheme for the erection of workers’ dwellings has been adopted by the Wellington Farmers’ Meat Company for its employees at the WaingaAva Works. A block of land has already been purchased on the Masterton side of the? works, and five houses will shortly be erected thereon. The terms of payment will enable an employee to pay off the total cost of his house within ten years. Mr. C. G. Sherwood, of Willis Street, has let a contract to Messrs Campbell and Burke for the erection of' a new two-storied reinforced concrete building to take the place of the old Avooden premises, now to be demolished in connection with the widening of Willis Street. Messrs Hoggar d and Prouse and W. H. Gummer, are the architects. An important sale of city property took place early this month, Mr. B. Buckley, licensee of the Forrester’s Arms Hotel, Ghuznee Street, having purchased from Miss E. Crawford the freehold of the Te Aro Hotel, corner of Willis and Bixon streets for £13,500.
