Timber Yard Workers' Dispute
Early this month the Arbitration Court sat in Christchurch., and the Timber Yard Workers' Dis pute came up for hearing.
At a sitting of the Conciliation Court, an agreement had been arrived at between the parties concerned, the rates of pay being fixed as follows— First-class machinists Is. 6d. per hour, second class machinists Is. 4d. per hour; other workers at machines over the age of 21, not included in the above definitions, Is. 3d. per hour; first sawer Is. 6d. per hour, other sawers Is. 4d. per hour, tailers out (over 21 years) Is. 3d. per hour; for all timber and coal yards, head yardmen £3 ss. per week, orderinen £3 per week, all other adult workers Is. 3d. per hour, casual labourers Is. 3-|-d. per hour, sawyers in coat yards Is. 4d. per hour.
The Union representatives now asked for an increase of 10 per cent, as a war bonus on the above rates, and this was strongly opposed by the employers.
After lengthy discussion the Court reserved its decision.
