Our 55th Competition
This competition for a Pavilion Club set by Mr. Gerald Jones, Lic.R.1.8.A., of Auckland, induced one competitor only, viz.: H. C. . Critchfield, ("Metro") with Messrs Anscombe and Smith of Invereargill. As Mr. Gerald Jones is now in camp, Mr. B. C. Chilwell, A.R.1.8.A. of Auckland, kindly undertook the judging of this competition. His remarks are as follows: —"I am sorry to see only one design sent in for this competition, the subject being one which should have brought bigger results. "Metro" has followed the conditions set down with the minimum of thought. The verandah is far too narrow being only 3 ft. from the back of post to the main wall; and "Metro" should remember that it takes at least 4 ft. space for two people to pass each other in comfort; this width should have been at least G ft.
The .shower rooms are very badlyplannedwithout light and ventilation; surely "Metro" must know that no sanitary arrangements are complete or even admissable without the foregoing attributes! It would have been quite simple to have arranged these rooms on the outer walls of the locker rooms without affecting this plan but an even better result would have been attained by contriving to arrange both these rooms to the sun.
The scullery is so badly arranged that criticism is dangerous. I would give very little for “Metro’s” peace of mind when the caretaker brought him to task over the equipment and lighting. Too much space has been given up to staircases for the size of the building, more particularly so when these staircases are an approach to a very uninteresting balcony only. The design is fair but does not show much originality; the general work shown seems to indicate that “Metro” has better capabilities in design and has perhaps been too slipshod in working out this problem. B. C. CHILWELL, A.E.1.8.A., Architect.
