Our 53rd Competition
For Seaside Town Improvements Only one drawing was received for this competition, i.c., “Layout,” by N. Wallnutt, with Messrs Mahoney and Son of Auckland, consequently no prize is payable, but the competitor’s work is published with the judge’s (Mr. B. C. Chilwell, A.R.1.8.A.) criticism, for the benefit of other students. He reports as follows: “At the present time the idea of a War Memorial is no doubt a subject uppermost in the minds of
everyone, and when called upon to design anything appertaining to town planning, it is only fitting that our best endeavours should be to keep for ever in our memories the great deeds and sacrifice of our fellow-men. Yet it is a subject requiring very great thought and delicate handling.
The cavern-like appearance of the two deep cuttings in “Layout’s” design, in proximity to the huge retaining walls gives more the effect of a Mausoleum, and the mystic groves or “weeping willows” add to that feeling.
“Layout” must remember that a scheme such as this is for all time, and when peace is again restored to the world one would rather he reminded of the gallant deeds with a thankfulness that such deeds have not been in vain rather than a feeling of
