Building Notes
AUCKLAND. Messrs. Hoggard, Prouse and Gummer, A.R.1.8.A., have completed plans for the new building for the New Zealand Insurance Company’s new building to be erected in Queen Street, Auckland. This building we hope to reproduce in our special Auckland building issue next month. It will be one of the finest buildings of its class in Australasia, and will cost over £60,000. The frontage to Queen Street will be 66ft. by a depth of 154 ft. The rear of the building will have a frontage to Mill Lane of 127 ft., and cue of 38ft. to Exchange Lane, reached by means of a large wing, extending eastward. The building, which is to be eight stories in height, will be a complete steel-frame structure with walls of reinforced concrete, to be fully faced on the Queen Street frontage with Sandy Bay (Nelson) marble. All the partitions are to. bo of pumice blocks held together laterally and vertically by oemented-in steel rods. These with reinforced concrete floors throughout are calculated to make the building as nearly fireproof as is possible. The steel to be used will cost about £12,000. The local branch of the company will have splendid quarters at the end of a spacious central corridor, and the public office will be given additional height by an oval-shaped balustrated opening in the mezzanine floor above. The head office of the company is given luxurious apartments on the second floor, immediately over the branch office. There will be in all some 160 offices in the building, which will take considerably over two. years to erect. The work is being done by sectional contract, under the eye of a building superintendent specially imported from Melbourne. CHRISTCHURCH. The building permits issued for the month of April are as follow: Central ward (inner), 7, value £21,200; central ward (outer), 5, value £1280; Linwood ward, 1, value £400; St. Albans ward, 12, value £3860; Sydenham ward, 7, value £3450 ; total, £30,190. EKETAHUNA. A block of buildings consisting of a butcher’s shop and suites of offices has been recently completed for Mr. Larnor in brick, plaster finish. The shop is occupied by M. Larnor, and is provided with a cold storage chamber, refrigerating plant, mincing machine. The machinery installed is very complete, the workroom well lighted and well arranged, and great attention given to ventilation;Contract, £2000; contractor, Frederick Bacon, Masterton. A dwelling is completed at Tinui of six rooms, etc., in timber, “Eternit” asbestos treatment to rooms. —Cost, £350; contractor, Frederick Bacon. New garage completed for Mr. Hutchison. MARTON JUNCTION.
Mr. W. H. Gomez, contractor, has in hand a dwelling containing six rooms, with two bays and two. verandahs, for Mr. J. Corbett.—Price, £360; a cottage at Turakina for Mr. Craigg of four rooms.— £260; a bungalow for Mr. J. Pickering five rooms, one verandah, casement windows.—Price £320. - Mr Gomez is employing black birch (Tawhai-ran-nui), known as red birch in Wellington district, for framing of houses, and also for fencing-posts and strainers, being strong and durable. This timber was employed as planking of old wharf at Picton, and has resisted wear and tear for oyer forty years. This tooth-leafed birch is mentioned in Kirk's work.
MASTERTON.
The Bank of New Zealand is a pleasing addition and adornment to the city. It is well-proportioned and digJ?^ d l m oH?, ent on Doric lines - The bank chamber is 54ft. by 36ft.; strong room 16ft by 12ft. The entrance is in the centre, stationery room on one side, and manager's room on the other. The depth of building is 76ft, and spacious corridor opening from a door at the side and connecting with a suite of living rooms, etc. ; architect, Mr. J Charlesworth— £4000; contractors, Taylor and Hodge. The Waingawa Freezing Works were recently extended, three new chambers having been added.—Contract, £7OOO- - Taylor and Hodge. ' The Telephone Exchange is under construction and will be m two storeys m brick, and will cost about £I3OO Contractors, Taylor and Hodge. The same contractors recently built the new Police Station. A seven-roomed bungalow is completed on Pownall street, with two verandahs, side entrance, two bavs and angle Contract, £750; contractors, Judd and Russell • also a bungalow of five rooms, drawing-room 17ft. by 15ft.,' kitchen 14ft. by 12ft., bedroom 13ft. 6in. by 12in., etc., two verandahs; cost, £420; contractors, Judd and Russell.
NEW PLYMOUTH.
Mr. Frank Messenger has prepared the plans for a new Fire Station in this city, the cost of which will be about £2500. The building will be in brick* with rough cast treatment. A valuable innovation is in evidence, in matter of a tower in reinforced concrete, which will be more than an architectural feature, serving the purpose of "look-out" and drying-place for hose in all weathers, engineroom, 48ft. x 32ft., and watch room, workshop, office, kitchen, and store, with a stairway to social hall, 38ft. x 42ft,, with an arcaded flat roof opening from landing, to bo utilised by staff, and leading to four bedrooms, and passage to tower, etc. Tower, 52ft., with piers, a courtyard provided, permitting grouping of sanitary arrangements, baths, etc., in one wing. The scheme has been fully thought out, and design is pleasing in effect. Mr. Mannix has completed a building containing two stores and chambers, in two storiesone store fitted up for a. jeweller, most modern in character. The upper part of the building is relieved with well-chosen details; sanded treatment to same. Tho building is in brick and timber. Price about £2300. Contractors, Boon Bros. Mr. Mannix has also completed R.C. Church at Ohura, in timber, to seat 100, with sanctuary and sacristy in Gothic architecture. Price £575. Contractors, Bairstow and Robinson. Sanderson and Griffiths, architects, New Plymouth, have just completed, for J. Veale, Esq., Auckland, business premises in reinforced concrete throughout, including the floors and ceilings. The ground floor is designed to suit a modern jeweller 1 with large well-lighted shop, office, showroom, work and strong rooms. The circular plate windows, with neat white metal bars, set on Motueka marble bases, together with mosaic entrances, give the building a very attractive finish. The interior partitions are relieved with leadlights. The upper floor is reached by a wide concrete staircase, prominent to the street frontage, and well lighted by lantern lights from the flat roof. There are two suites of offices upstairs, with every possible; convenience. Messrs. Coleman and Son were the contractors, the price being approximately £2300. The same firm have also completed a residence of six rooms on the Frankley Road, with stables and.outbuildings. Price £733. Contractor, Messrs. Coleman and Son; a bungalow cottage at Fitzroy, containing 5 rooms, conveniences, and large verandahs. Price £530 Contractor, Mr. F. Newell. A printing establishment for
Thos. Avery, Esq.,, adjoining present business premises. Ihe walls and floors are of reinforced concrete, roof formed ot bow string iron girders, decked with Orgeon T. and G boarding, and felt, and covered with "Limmer" mineral mastic asphalte. The ventilation is especially good, the windows throughout being hung with the Austral sash balance, and glazed with Pilkington's prismatic glass. The heating is by ideal hot-water radiators and boilers. Illuminated electrically throughout. Contractor, Mr. J. G. M. Russell. Tender, £1260. Messrs. White and Sons, drapers, have had the interior ot their large shop remodelled, providing large central staircase leading to showrooms and dressmaking departments. Contractor, Mr. H. H. Grayling. PETONE.
• Petone s to have a settlement of workers' homes on what is called the Wilford Settlement. Already most of the sections have been taken up by those desirous of obtaining homes under the Workers' Dwellings Act. The settlement is capable of carrying m the vicinity of a thousand homes. Mr. Jas. Bennie, of Wellington, has drawn plans for a new picture theatre at the back of the Working Men's Club, to seat 1000 people. The successful tenderers are Messrs. PALMERSTON NORTH.

A residence for Mrs. Moore, on Milson Line, 6 rooms, £9OO- - at Dannevirke for Mr. W. H. Hartgill, cost £IOOO additions to factory at Bunnythorpe for Messrs. Nathan and Co., price £1000; contractors, Thomas Griggs and Son; residence in College Street for Mr. C. S. Pees; a residence at Piripin for Mr. J. Peters, price £964; contractors, Jorgensen and Wesche; additions and alterations to residence for Mr. C. F. Baker at Papataw. The following works have been recently completed:—Garage in Cuba Street for H. J. Woodfield, cost £740 : contractors, Jorgensen and Wesche The new building in Rangitikei Street for Messrs. Man. son and Barr, Ltd., now completed, is, we believe, the largest block of business premises in Palmerston North It has a frontage of 76ft., depth 290 ft., consisting of store, machinery hall, extensive warehouses, etc., in the rear and suites of offices on the street line, second floor. Laboursaving devices are employed in handling the heavy machinery, etc., stocked by the firm. Machinery and fitting shops provided, and detached from mail building is the engineroom, containing a Blackstone oil engine, supplied by Andrew and Beaven, of Christchurch, which forms part of the installation of dynamo, etc., for generating electricity for the whole of the lower part of the building, this being the work of Messrs. Turnbull and Jones. The hardware and machinery showrooms have been most successfully treated with vyunderlich steel ceilings. A separate cement and lime store for Wilson's Star cement and hydraulic lime, built and elevated above the ground. Battery room for storage of
lubricating oils, paints, grease, etc., is remote from all other buildings. The facade is well designed for its purpose. The main building of 2 storeys is in brick, with concrete face, Wilson’s cement employed. Contractors, Messrs. Sollitt Bros.; cost, about £IO,OOO. WANGANUI. Mr. H. M. Helm, architect, has following works under construction:Nursing Home for Mrs. Edwards, Waverley. The entrance at the side opens into a vestibule and long corridor, extending to a wing for maternity ward, while on the right are arranged 4 single and 2 double rooms, and on the left sitting-room, dining-room, rooms for staff, kitchen, etc. Fan-lights and Ross’s patent skylights are introduced to rooms, and “Poilite” treatment for walls; cost about £I3OO. Building in timber; contractors, Walpole. Darlington, and Patterson; a bungalow for Mr. M'Caul. of 6 rooms, etc., living room, 18ft. x 13ft., with bay window and dining recess, portico. A residence in two stories, with overhanging bay, supported on two columns, is being constructed for Mr. E. A. Younes ; living room, 24ft. bin. x 15ft. Bin., with 2 bay windows and music alcove, folding doors, opening to same from hall, kitchen, domestic offices, and din-ing-room, etc., on ground floor. Entrance in middle, a wellarranged staircase leads to second storey, containing 5 bedrooms, etc. The same architect has recently completed a bungalow for Mr. Harden, of 7 rooms, casement windows, and a Pergola is a feature to the porch. Oak-framed beam ceilings and “Poilite ” treatment to rooms. A bungalow for Mr. D. R. Wallace, containing 5 rooms, living room, 18ft. x 14ft., with outside sleeping bay at one end and loggia at other, with entrance at side, two piers supporting, overhanging roof. Price, £SBO. Contractor, Gould. The N.Z. Express Co.’s building, by Mr. Fleming M‘Donald, of Dunedin, is now completed. It has three stories in front, four at back, and is built of reinforced concrete, and faced with brick and treated with cement stone finish; 66ft. x 92ft. Lines pleasing and effective. It contains extensive sample rooms, chambers, with offices for the company. The entrance and corridors are spacious, and exceedingly well lighted, with large stairway. A counter with corner at a set radius increases the office space, and should facilitate business; adjoining is a covered way in rear for freight, over which lavatories are built out on cantilever principle. The floors are in Malthoid treatment, and Milburn cement is employed in building; windows have steel frames, and the building is fireproof to a degree. Messrs. J. and W. Faulkner supplied a specially well-chosen design for staircase ironwork. Cost £6200. Superintendent, Mr. R. A. Cornish. Mr. T. H. Battle, architect, has completed for Salvation Army, in proximity to Sunday School, a new building in brick and plaster, 60ft. x 30ft. ; heart of rimu floor, cost £B7O. Contractors, Britton and 'Purvey, also a bungalow cottage at Gonville. Contractors, Poynter. Price £540. The same architect has under construction three shops, with dwelling room, of two stories, in brick, Guyton Street, three shops, near Victoria Avenue. Mr. Battle’s most important contract being new premises for Messrs. George and Kersley, on half-acre block Victoria Avenue. Mr. Larsen, A.R.1.8.A., has completed at Patea an 8roomed bungalow, with piazza, and replete with every comfort, cost £7OO. This architect has under construction a residence for Mr. E. M. Rose, in reinforced concrete, on Cains Avenue, Gonville, two stories, with old English gables, and splayed base, containing 8 rooms, etc., with loggia and porch. It contains a large living room, with bay window, opening from reception hall, which leads also to stair hall, provided with cloak room, etc. The ceilings will be in beams and “Poilite” treatment, and library provided with built-in bookcases, casement windows. All plumbing work and sanitary arrangements are grouped in two stories in convenient positions, under hygienic principles. The exterior work will be rough-cast and toned in two colours; cost £1099. Contractors, Dick and Flyger. A block of .shops and dwelling-rooms, Guyton Street, cost about £2OOO. Plans and designs completed for residence at St. John’s Hill, with garden features, on acre section, containing 8 rooms, etc., including lounge hall, with stairs and gallery; large reception room, with radial seating in on© end, and enclosed alcove, with mullioned window. Dining-room, high , wainscotting, recessed for decoration, ceiling with beams, etc., in black oak; bow windows in facade, etc. Schlaadt’s wrought-steel casements, entrance in middle, a porch,, with overhanging hood, suspended on chains sheltering steps. The
base of building will be splayed, and a band extended across the building, rising over the entrance for shadow • effect, while the general treatment will be rough-cast in two tones; base of . clinker brick, roof Somerset tiles, By extension of one wing provision made for garage, workshop, washhouse, etc., sleeping bays also provided, and there will bo two balconies to second floor. The same architect has recently completed a 6-roomed dwelling in Glasgow Street, costing £550, in timber; also a ferro-concretc dwelling of 5 rooms in Mackay Street, costing £450. Messrs Russell and Bignell, builders, of Wanganui, have the following contracts in hand: —Erection of New
banking premises for Bank of Australasia in brick and marble (Riwaka marble), to cost £9OOO, to designs of Messrs Atkins and Bacon, architects, Wellington. Erection of business and club premises in brick, at Marten, for Messrs. Davenport Bros., to cost £2,700, to designs of Mr. Robin Hood, architect, Eeilding. Erection of new club house for Wanganui Club in St. Hill street, Wanganui, to cost £9OOO, to designs of Messrs. Rush and James, architects, Hastings. Erection of brick school premises fov Wanganui Education Board, at Gonville, designed by the Board’s architect, Mr. W. Hood. Also modern residences in brick at Gonville for Messrs. Johnston,' and W. Scott, designed by Mr. W. McLeod, architect, Wanganui. During the year ended March 31st last buildings permits were issued in the borough representing a total value of £95,626. WELLINGTON. Tenders were called last month for the erection of a new block of buildings to be erected for Mr. J. Kirkcaldie, in Lambton Quay, next to the Public Trust Office, by the architects, Messrs. Hoggard, Prouse, and W. H. Glimmer, A.R.1.8.A., Messrs. Campbell and Burke being the successful tenderers at £10,217. The work of erecting a new brick building in Kent Terrace for Messrs. N. Nimmo and Sons is progressing rapidly. The large showroom will face Kent Terrace, and in addition to a spacious workshop there are various offices. The contractors are Messrs. Sanders Bros., and the plans and specifications were prepared by Mr. E. H. Knight. The tender of £10,980 from Mr. A. E. Hurrell has been accepted for the erection of the new building for the Boys’ Institute, in Tasman Street. The plans have been prepared b/ Mr. W. Gray Young, and show a five-story steel-frame building, with a frontage of 40ft. to Tasman Street, and a depth of 178 ft. The front elevation has been designed in the English renaissance style, and is to be built with pressed brickwork, relieved with cement cornice, and balcony. The roof is to be covered with grey green Westmoreland slates, which will be enhanced by the white-painted doorways of the top floor. Another new picture theatre (the Grand) is to be erected to the designs of Messrs. Hoggard and Prouse and W. H. Hummer, A.R.1.8.A., in Manners Street, on the premises recently occupied by H. Feilder and Co. The building will have a frontage of 61ft. on Manners Street, and a .height of 60ft. to top of parapet, and will seat 1400 people. The tender of Messrs. Campbell and Burke has been accepted for the erection. The contract price is £10,196. Other tenders received were as follows: — C. Watt, £10,362; Hunt and M‘Donald, £10,526; Howie and Matthews, £11,240; H. Hurrell, £10,530; Sanders Bros., £11,296, M'Lean and Gray, £11,545 ; Murdock and Wallace, £11,994; Watts Bros., £12,029; Wiikening, £12,160. A new theatre and concert hall is to be erected in Molesworth Street. The theatre will be for an up-to-date picture theatre, to seat 1000 persons, and the concert halt will accommodate 750. Engineering The Wellington Harbour Board is calling for tenders for the proposed new Pipitea Wharf and shed. Tenders must be in by August 26th, 1914, and particulars can be obtained from the engineer to the board and also at the offices of the Auckland, Lyttelton and Otago Harbour Boards. The Public Works Department is calling for tenders for the construction of about four miles of formation and bridge work for the Whangarei Railway Extension. Tenders must be in by June 22nd.
