Repairs^ are in hand to a residence in •Buckle street, Wellington. Architect, John S. Swan ; contractors, Davies & Browman. ****** Mr. J. W. Fosette's tender has been accepted for the erection of a nine-roomed residence in Sydney street. Wellington. Nineteen tenders were received by the architect. The house and furniture was designed and executed by Mr. Chapman-Taylor, architect and art craftsman, and is after the style of the pre-sent-day English home. The dining-room, drawing-room and hall have jarrah wood-

work and floors. This handsome wood, which is oiled only, presents a beautiful and rich appearance and gives a feeling of substantial comfort. The woodwork of the bedroom is enamelled ivory white, and the furniture which is built in is of oiled jarrah The bouse contains six living roon s 1 c c idcs bathroom, scullery pantry hall a laigt baleom and numerous wardrobes and cupboards and is exceptionally well built. The total cost, including all built-in furniture, was £770. Owing to the nature of the ground we were unable to obtain an exterior photograph.

The contract lias been signed for the erection of a workman's cottage at Belmont for the Belmont Gravel Syndicate. Architect, John S. Swan; contractor, J. A. Swan. *** * * * The tender of the Ferro-Concrete Company at £12,000 has been accepted for the erection of the New Zealand Insurance Company's building at the corner of J v ambton quay and Grey street, Wellington. ****** The plans and specifications are completed, and tenders are now being invited for an eight-roomed two-story house, to be erected off Woolcornbe street, Wellington. Architect, J. M. Dawson.

Mr C. Houchen has purchased for removal the old buildings in Majoribanks street known as the " Majoribanks Street Trust." ****** Messrs. J .McLean & Son are the first Wellington firm to secure the contract foi the building of a ferro-concrete structuie in the capital city. ****** The accompanying illustrations show exterior and interior \iews of a residence recently completed for Mr. S. Brice, at Goldie's Brae, Wellington. The one interior view shows the reception hall and staircase. The house contains thirteen rooms, including a 28 x 18 ft. billiard room. Several novel features in design have been introduced, one of which is the stair-landing bracketed out from the side of the house in the form of a bay window, and another is the columned entrance from the hall to the drawing-room. The latter room is finished in flatted white and gold, with suitable paper and frieze. Architect. J. M. Dawson.

The new Primitive Methodist church at Newtown was opened on the 4th of August. The interior has a very pleasing effect, being nicely brought out in tinted walls, etc. The ceiling is of fibrous plaster of embossed design. Throughout the building is of a veiy attractive character. Contract price, about £1600. Architects, Maisey and Johns ; contractor. W. Wilkenning. ****** Mr. William M. Page, for several years in the office of Sir R. Rowand Anderson, IyL.D., the eminent architect of Edinburgh, arrived in New Zealand last month, and has since joined the staff of Messrs. Thos. Turnbull & Son as chief assistant. Sirßowand Anderson, it will be remembered, was the architect fcr the McEwan Hall in Edinburgh, in which Sir J. G. Ward recently received Ihe honorary degree of Uv D-, and while with Sir Rowand Mr. Page supervised alterations and additions to Balmoral Castle, additions to the late Earl of I^even & Melville's country seat in Morayshiie, and completed a new ball- r oom for the Earl of linlithgow (well known to colonials as Ivord Hopetoun), at Hopetoun, the noble lord's seat a few miles out of Edinburgh. Mr. Page also held office for a long period as honorary secretary of the Edinburgh Architectuial Association, the principal architectural body in Scotland. It is satisfactory to know that the ranks of our local profession are being augmented by an architect of such -ttide experience. The contract has been signed for the erection of a pri\ ate hotel and shops in Courtenay place, Wellington, for Messrs. Dwan Bros. The building will occupy a site on the corner of Courtenay place and Taranaki street. It is to be three stories high, and ample provision has been made in the way of sitting-rooms, smoke-rooms, bath-rooms, etc.. and a large, well-lit dining-room is situated on the ground floor. Two shops occupy the Courtenay - place frontage and are sheltered by a balcony which extends round into Taranaki street. The elevations are finished in pressed brick with stucco facings. The work is to be completed by February next. Architect. J. M. Dawson ; contractor. A. Ford.

Another contract, to carry out the design of Mr. Dawson, has been let lor the erection of a nine-ioomed house at Lowry Bay. It is of one floor, built on a concrete foundation and covered with a Maiseilks-tile roof. Trie fiont is crnamented -with castiron work and quoin blocks, and wide concrete steps lead to the main entrance. In addition there are stables and outbuildings. The grounds are laid out with a gravelled drive, paths and a large grass lawn. Provision has been made for flower beds, and the planting of ornamental trees, the whole being surrounded by a rustic fence. Contractor, J. B. Wood.
