To Soften Cast Iron for Drilling.
Heat to a cheiry-red, having it lie level in the fire. Then with tongs put on a piece of brimstone, a little less in size than the whole is to be. This softens the iron entirely through. Let it lie in the fire until slightly cooled, when it is ready to drill.
