Wilson, architect, writes to the effect that the illustration of a modern villa, which we printed in last issue, represents the dwelling recently erected for Mr. Minty, manager, Kaiapoi Woollen Co.'s works, and situated m Repton street, Menvale Chnstchurch. Best quality materials have been used in the construction of this dwelling. The timber used in the finish of the inside of the building is oiled red pine. Roche & Co.'s metal
ceilings and cornices are fixed in the hall, drawingroom, dming-room, breakfast-room, and bed rooms, and there are up-to-date sanitary arrangements, electric bells, alcoves, timber grilles, etc. The approach to the main hall is on the north side of the building. Everything has been done to make the building thoroughly up-to-date. ****** A building built of Ashburton pressed bricks, with dressings of Oamaru stone, has been erected for Messrs. Craddock & Simes at the corner of Oxford terrace and Hereford street, Chnstchurch. The three-quarter columns on first floor have richly carved capitals, and these and other detail work
present much originality of design. The ground floor, with the exception of two shops on the terrace, is occupied by Messrs Craddock & Simes, and their accommodation includes vestibule and hall, public office, principals' offices, typist's office, strong-rooms, lavatory, etc. The public space is octagonal in plan, with specially modelled fibrous plaster ceiling and arches. The first floor is subdivided into suites of offices with strong-rooms and lavatory accommodation. The building is lighted by electricity throughout, installed by A. R. Craddock, and is occupied by several Government Departments. The architects are to be congratulated on their design for such an up-to-date block of offices. Architects, Clarkson & Ballantyne ; contractor, F. E. Shaw. " Erewhon," the residence of Mr. Caccia Birch, was erected from the designs, and under the supervision of Mr. C. Tilleard Natusch. The small low-verandahed portion, with its floor close to the ground, was built in the early days when all the materials, including the bricks, had to be packed on horses and transported many miles. In view of the difficulty of getting materials the " homestead " was really at first a cottage. The modern idea of keeping the floors well off the ground necessitated the adding of a few stairs to the fine drawing-room, which is lighted by the large corner window, and then a few more to the new bed rooms, which explains the reason for the windows of each portion of the house being higher than m the rooms nearer the old cottage, although the ceilings of the larger part of the house are level, so as to make possible the addition of another floor in the future. The house is built with substantial brick walls upon a stone foundation, and finished with timber gables and studding on both faces of exterior walls, for appearance externally, but inside to take the lining. ****** Messrs. Moller & Young's new premises m Worcester street, Christchurch, have been specially built to suit the requirements of the business. The lighting is a feature of the construction of the interior of the building. In the front of the building is the bench (lit by electricity) used by workmen m jewellery and heraldic engraving. In the centre of the shop the office is erected, and the back portion of the building is fitted up m the most modern method. On the right of the shop there is a row of four powerful stamping machines used in the manufacture of brass labels and general die work. Near by is a specially constructed forge where the dies are worked m the rough. In the centre is a table 15 ft. in length on which are erected the
emery ■wheels and sensitive drills used in the steel stamp-making, and to the right of this bench is a routing machine for the manufacture of brass name plates, all of them being driven by a powerful electric motor. On the left is the rubber stampmaking department, and furthei on is the polishing benches and water-tap overhanging — all surplus water being carried away by pipe connections. The stencil-plate and wood-block engraving is done at the rear of the shop, and is served by an exceedingly good light. Messrs Moller & Young have spared no expense to make their workshops as up-to-date as possible, and they are indebted to their architect, W V Wilson for the creditable manner in which he has carried out the requi-ed arrangements in the constiuction
