WEST PLAINS AND RIMU

(From our travelling correspondent.) The name of Mr. W. Curran appeared in my last notes instead of that of his late father (Mr. M. Curran) having reference to a memorial to be erected in the iWaikiwi Church, Among those recently returned from the front are Privates R. Joyce, M. Short, and M. Kerr (West Plains). Their many friends rejoice to see these young men back again in their midst, fit and well. The formation of a Celtic Club is now an accomplished fact, and the members are to meet monthly for debates and social gatherings. Mass is celebrated, periodically, in the public school building at Rimu, where, as may be imagined, the accommodation is as uncomfortable as it is unsuitable. Sunday school is held after Mass. On last Sunday a meeting was held to devise ways and means of raising funds for the erection of a Catholic church.

Rimu' is a small bush settlement where the faith -is fostered ' amid much discouragement and many hardships. In all weathers-storm and sunshineour good fellow-Catholics in this remote locality assemble in the little schoolhouse, after walking or driving many weary miles, to assist at Holy Mass. Surely such persevering people few in numbers but strong in faith —deserve - ' encouragement, - and whatever assistance those of their co-religionists who enjoy all the conveniences afforded by residence in towns, can render them in their pressing need, and laudable endeavor to erect a church for themselves and for their children. With regret, the death is recorded at Lawrence, of Mrs. Catherine O’Driscoll, mother of Mr. T. O’Driscoll, Mokotua, late of Wrey’s Bush. —R.l.P.
