A GODLESS CONFERENCE.
Tho enemies of the Pope are of three types: the devil and his angels in the flesh ; the bigots, who hate the Pope because they realise his power; and honestfolk, who dislike him because they don’t know any better, and have never had a chance of seeing him or hearing anything about him (says Australia). All three classes exulted when the Pope was not aske.d to take part in the Peace Conference. I wonder whether the third class would continue their exultation if they reflected on the consequences of the Pope’s exclusion. The absence of the Pope has meant the absence of God. Among all the peace delegates who throughout the war so confidently professed to rely on Divine assistance, not one had the courage even to suggest that Divine guidance be asked in their deliberations. The name of God was not even, mentioned. We all
hope that some good will come of the Conference. But when we know the facts, can we hope that this godless League will be better than any of its innumerable predecessors .
