ST. JOSEPH'S PARISH, WELLINGTON.

? ' (From a correspondent.) Jot. Joseph s Parish Committee met at the presbytery, Patterson street, on Wednesday, July 28. " The Key. lather Parra, - S.M., presided, and there was a full attendance of members. Mrs. Daly (vice-presi-dent, Auckland Parish Committee) was present as a visitor. The election of officers resulted as follows: Vice-presidents, Miss Craig and Mr. J. O’Brien; secretary, Mr. A. Cassie treasurer, Mr. P. Nolan; auditor, Mr. W. Gamble. Rev. Father Barra, in welcoming the members, referred to the good work done by the committee during the year just closed, and he felt sure that the same work would be continued by the present committee. The main question was to enrol all Catholics as members, and encourage them to pay their subscriptions, lie suggested that members should prepare papers or lecturett.es tor certain meeting nights when the general business was light. The secretary reported on the work done at the annual meeting of the Wellington Diocesan Council, lie also reported on the work done on behalf of the committee during the month, lie was arranging street lists in preparation for making a house-to-house canvass of the parish, and he hoped that all members would give their assistance in this work. Comment was made on the'condition of the old Catholic cemetery in Mount street, and it was decided to report the matter to the Diocesan Council for consideration and action. it was resolved that the monthly meetings of the committee be held on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The secretary (Mr. A. Cassie) commented on a clause in his annual report in reference to the need of an up-to-date Catholic‘ hall for Wellington, one which would fill the requirements of the whole of the city parishes. He presented sketch plans of a suitable building-, and stated that he had asked the Diocesan Executive to call a meeting of the whole of the city committees to go into the matter. Father Parra referred to the elaborate manner in which Mr. Cassie had worked out his scheme, but he thought the amount required for building, added to the price of a suitable section, would be beyond their means. Several members congratulated the secretary on the way be brought the matter before the meeting. They also spoke of the need of a parish hall for St. Joseph’s, which was sorely needed, as all meetings of the parish had to be held in the presbytery.
