April 5. The following candidates from the Convent of Mercy, Christchurch, have been successful at recent examinations: —Teachers’ G and D—Mary Gardiner and Annie McDonnell; art of teaching music—Norah Fitzgibbon, A.T.C.L., and Phyllis Hollow, A.T.C.L. The following candidates from the Convent of Mercy, Darfield, were successful in passing the, Theory of Music examination held last December: —Intermediate division —Rubina Long, Lizzie Welsh; junior division (honors) —Ralph Lattimore, Mary Dunne, Una Clinton; preparatory division —Ella Hoglund, Netta Burkett, Esther Loader. On Holy Thursday Mass was celebrated at 9 o’clock by the Rev. Father Hickson, S.M., after which the procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose took place. During the day watch was kept up by large numbers of the congregation, the St. Vincent. do Paul brothers, assisted by the men of the parish, keeping the night watch. On Good Friday the Mass of the Presanctified was celebrated by the Rev. Father Hickson, S.M., after which there was Adoration of the Cross. At 3 o’clock the devotion of the Way of the Cross took place, and was followed by an appropriate sermon by Rev. Father Hoare, S.M. The blessing of the Font and kindling of the Fire took place prior to the 7 o’clock Mass. On Easter Sunday at the early Masses exceptionally large numbers received Holy Communion. The 11 o’clock Mass, celebrated by the Very Rev. Dean Hills, S.M., was attended by another very large congregation. The choir, under the conductorshin of Mr A. P. De La our', rendered Mozart’s Twelfth Mass. The Very Rev. Dean preached a. practical sermon on the feast of the day, and wished all a. holy and happy Easter. At the conclusion of the Mass the Dean entertained the members of the choir in the presbytery. The decorations of the Altar of Repose and on Easter Sunday were carried out by the ladies of the Altar Sovietv, under the supervision of the president- (M rs .) . S. Ba ett ), in a. decidedly tasteful manner. At the Competitions just concluded excellent results were attained by the pupils of the Convent of Mercy, Colombo street, and fully justifies the opinions held by the general public as well as the Catholic community of the high standard of knowledge imparted by the Sisters. The different events were keenly contested by competitors from all parts of the Dominion, the following being successful; —Children s chorus, The comrades’ song of hope,’ first prize ; piano duet, 10 and under 13N Russia,’ Miss M. McManaway and Miss Norma Middleton, first prize ;• piano solo, under 10, Miss Katie Cassidy, first prize : children’s action song, ‘Japanese maidens,’ second prize piano duet, amateurs, any age, ‘ Piers symphonique,’ Miss E. Carter and Master 11. Moody, second prize : piano duet, 13 and under 16, ‘ Marche Bohemicnne,’ Miss Vera Dwyer and Master H. Moody, second prize; piano solo, 10 and under 13, £ Sonatina in G minor,’ Miss Norma Middleton, second prize; piano solo, under 10, ‘ The mill on the brook,’ Miss Doris Middleton, second prize; piano duet, under 10, ‘ Minuet d’Enfants,’ Miss D. Middleton and Master Roy O’Malley, second prize; piano duet any age, ‘ Piers symphonique,’ Miss L. Timbrell and Miss Cliristobel Robinson, third prize piano solo (reading at sight), amateurs, Miss Christobel Robinson, third prize piano duet, 10 and under 13, Russia, Misses Amies Young and Mavis Baty, third prize: song for boys, under 16, own selection, Master Howard Moody, third prize; piano solo, 13 and under 16, ‘Rondo in C ’ Miss Vera Dwyer, highly commended : piano duet 10 and under 13, ‘ Russia,’ Miss Colleen O’Malley and Miss Mona Neale, highly commended; song for hoys, under 16, ‘A May morning,’ Master Howard Moody, highly commended.
