DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(By telegraph, from our own correspondent.) March 29. His Lordship the Bishop returned to Auckland from the south on Saturday morning. He officiates at the Holy Week services, and leaves on Easter Monday for Sydney. The Rev. Father Clarke who, for over four years has been chaplain to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Ponsonby, has resigned the chaplaincy, owing to continued ill-health. Rev. Father Cahill addressed the last meeting of the Holy Family Confraternity on ‘ Uprightness of character,’ and pointed out what every Catholic young man and woman should be. The example of a good Catholic in the community was incalculable. The friends of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Mary’s Convent, Ponsonby, assembled on Thursday to witness the profession of seven members of the Community. The 3’oung ladies who received the black vei], were —- Miss Kathleen Wallace (in religion, Sister M. Philomena), of A 1 bury, N.S.W. ; Miss May Mulvay (Sister M. Brigid), Cobar, N.S.W. ; Miss Rita McAlister (Sister M. Magdalen de Pazzi), Galway; Miss Gertrude Day (Sister M. Monica), Melbourne; Miss Teresa Perkins (Sister M. Ussula), Murrurundi, N.S.W.; Miss Margaret Tully (Sister M. Angela), Bray, Ireland; and Miss Norah Collins (Sister M. Xavier), Dundalk, Ireland. Owing to the absence of his Lordship Bishop Cleary, who was attending the obsequies of the late Bishop Grimes, the ceremony was performed by the Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, V.G., who preached a most eloquent sermon on the occasion. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was commenced at 8 a.m., during which the candidates for profession made their vows and received the black evil and ring from the celebrant. The altar was beautifully decorated with choice flowers, and the music was rendered by the Sacred Heart Choir, Ponsouby, which was conducted by Mr. T. Adams, Miss Jones being the organist for the occasion. Among the clergy in the sanctuary were Very Rev. Paul Kehoe (Wexford), and the Rev. Fathers 1 Golden, Cahill, Murphy, Furlong, Jansen, McLaughlin, Forde, Dunphie, Kelly, and O’Brien. The religious ceremony concluded, the visitors were entertained at breakfast in the convent by the Sisters. The Sisters of Mercy in Auckland are to be congratulated on the increase of the staff to aid in the works of —hospital and orphanage works, — and in the primary and secondary schools conducted by the Order in the diocese.
