Onehunga

(From a correspondent.) The convent school opened on February 1 with a splendid attendance. Up to date every available desk has its occupant, so that the school committee will be called upon to find more seating accommodation, as new pupils are still seeking admission. The school committee are to be congratulated on the work done to the buildings and school grounds, making the former more commodious, and convenient, and the latter available for tennis and other games. The annual school report, sent in by Mr. X. T. Lambourne, M.A., may be termed excellent, as 90 [ter cent, of those presented for proficiency in Standard VI. secured certificates. Master Gordon Maxwell won a scholarship, carrying £-10 per annum. A cable from London states that. Miss May Martin, 13 years of age, was the successful candidate in the thirteenth British and Foreign Sailors’ Society’s naval history essay competition, the subject being In your opinion, who was the greatest sailor after Nelson'?’ Results to hand show that all presented for book-keeping and shorthand in December last passed successfully. Trixie Wharton and James Godfrey gained honors in the advanced grade in both subjects. Not alone in educational matters, but in sport also have the pupils done well. At the Onehunga Friendly Societies’ sports, held February 20, the convent pupils played Mt. Roskill, Te Papapa, and the Onehunga public schools for the Shaldrick Contest Cup. The convent A and H teams came first and second respectively, and Te Papapa third. The event was keenly contested. Another shield will be placed on the cup to the credit of the convent. The Sisters have been the recipients of many letters of congratulation from the leading members of the parish.
