DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(By telegraph, from our own correspondent.) October 6. Mr. Moriarty, the Tablet representative, was here yesterday. At the Masses at the Cathedral his advent was announced, and the congregations were urged to subscribe to our only Catholic paper. The Triduum in connection with the jubilee was held at the Cathedral on Wednesday, Thursday, and _ Friday evenings. Right Rev. Mgr. Brodie, V.G., preached each evening. On Wednesday he explained the object of the jubilee, and dealt with indulgences. On Thursday he preached on faith. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was given each evening, when there were large congregations.. A very pleasing function in connection with the Children of Mary Confraternity took place in St. Patrick’s Convent Schoolroom on the evening of October 1, the occasion being a farewell by the members to Miss Alice Porter, who is about to be married. In the absence of the spiritual director, the president (Miss E. Willis) made the presentation, which took the form of a very handsome silver teapot. His Lordship Bishop Cleary attended St. Benedict’s last evening, and preached a fine sermon on our Blessed Lady. Pontifical Benediction followed. Rev. Fathers Forde and McLaughlin being deacon and subdeacon respectively. Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan was present in the sanctuary. A special feature was the decorations of the Blessed Virgin’s altar, which was ablaze with electric lights. This was the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and was greatly admired. St. Benedict’s bazaar was continued during the week, and was well attended, the greatest enthusiasm being shown by all concerned in securing its success. A matinee was held on Saturday afternoon at which the children in large numbers attended, and for whom a special entertainment was provided. The tug-of-war competition has created keen rivalry and stirring contests. The Confraternity and Austrian teams were left in the final struggle for supremacy. It resulted in a win for the Confraternity. The Austrians are to be complimented on their good showing, as the winners have been champions for some time. The Confraternity won two successive —the first in 62 seconds, and the second in Imin 56sec. At the Cathedral yesterday there was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from the last Mass until after - Vespers. At 3 o’clock there was a renewal of Baptismal vows by the children. They assembled at the convent school, and, with the Confraternity, Guard of Honor, and Children of Mary, marched in procession via Hobson and Wyndham streets to the Cathedral. The vows were nicely read by Miss Alice Riggs. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament followed. In the evening the church was well filled, when Rev. Father Doyle preached a fine sermon. A procession of the Blessed Sacrament followed, in which the children and confraternities took part. A number of children received their First Communion in the morning, after which

breakfast was partaken of at the convent school, Hobson street. The Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, which has just been enlarged, was opened on Sunday morning by his Lordship Bishop Cleary. Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Golden. His Lordship preached an appropriate sermon, and declared the church open. There "was a large congregation, and special music was rendered by the choir. His Lordship administered the Sacrament of Confirmation in the afternoon. At Vespers in the evening, Right Rev. Mgr. Brodi© preached an excellent sermon to a large, .congregation. Even with the present enlargement, the church but barely meets the requirements of the . growing parish. The work of Fathers Edge and Golden are well shown by the great attendance at the western suburban church.
