OBITUARY
MR. MYLES McPADDEN, WESTPORT. Mr. Myles McPadden, J.P., passed away at his residence, Grouse Lodge, Buller Gorge, on the morning of March 17, after an illness of several weeks' duration. Mr. McPadden was one of the best known men in the Buller district, having for many years occupied seats on local governing bodies, notably the Buller County. Council, Hospital Board, and Westport Harbor Board. For several terms he was County Chairman. He was a splendid citizen, held in the very highest esteem by the whole community. Mr. McPadden was born in Leitrim, Ireland, some 84 years ago. As a young man he came out to Victoria, and was a pioneer gold-miner of Bendigo and other famous goldfields. He took part in the mining ' rush ' to New Zealand, landing at Dunedin. Subsequently he worked in Marlborough and Canterbury, and at the opening of the West Coast he walked from Christchurch to the Coast. He settled at Addison's Flat in the early 'sixties, and carried on business as a storekeeper, afterwards removing to Westport. The deceased gentleman leaves an adult family. His wife predeceased him by a year. The deceased died fortified by the rites of the Catholic Church,.of which he was a very devoted member. The funeral was very largely attended. The members of the H.A.C.B. Society, of which the deceased was an honorary member, were present in regalia. A 3 the cortege was leaving the church, the ' Dead March' from 'Saul' was played. The Ven. Archpriest Walshe officiated both at the church and graveside.— R.I.P. MRS. JOHN MEADE, POOLBURN. The death occurred on Easter Monday, at Poolburn, Otago Central, of Mrs. Meade, wife of Mr. John Meade, a well-known carrier and contractor throughout Otago. The deceased lady was a native of Knockenagh, County Clare, and came to Dunedin from Geelong, Victoria. She was for many years a resident of South Dunedin, being one of the first parishioners of St. Patrick's. Of late years she had resided in the Ida Valley, and at Tarras, where, owing to her genial disposition, she made a wide circle of friends, as was testified by the large numbers who attended the funeral as a tribute of their respect. She is survived by her husband and two sons. Rev. Father O'Dca attended the deceased during her long illness, and officiated at the graveside in the Omakau cemetery.—R.l.P.
