ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON
(From our own correspondent.) April 5. The many friends of Mr. Edmond Carrigan, J.P., will hear with regret of the serious illness of Mrs. Carrigan. Rev. Father Barra, S.M., of St. Joseph's, Buckle street, has consented to prepare a paper to be read at the current session of the French Club. The Particular-Council of the St. Vincent de Paul Society met last evening at St. Mary's Presbytery, under the presidency of Bro. B. Ellis. Good reports were received from the various conferences. The profits of the recent ' Emerald Isle' dramatic performance, given by the Celtic Dramatic Co., totalled £BO, and this amount has been handed over to the St. Patrick's Conference (Seamen's) of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the purpose of augmenting the fund for the erection of a Catholic Seamen's Mission Hall in Wellington. Bro. Jas. B. R. Stead, of Auckland H.A.C.B. Society, arrived by the Main Trunk express on Thursday, and is spending a few days in Wellington prior to the triennial meeting, which is to be held at Napier next week. Bro. Stead will represent the St. Aloysius' branch, Wellington South, at the conference. For the past ten years he has acted as Wellington's representative at Auckland. The approaching visit to Wellington of PI.M.S. New Zealand is creating a lively interest in the affairs of the Navy League. In response to an invitation to explain the objects of the league to the students, Mr. C. W. Palmer (local secretary) delivered an address at St. Patrick's College on Monday last. At the conclusion, Mr. Palmer was given three hearty cheers. Practically every student has become a member of the league. Yesterday, at St. Mary of the Angels' Church, Boulcott street, Mr. P. Doyle, till recently of the Police Force, Wellington, but now of the Magistrate's Court staff, Wanganui, was married to Miss Eleanor Maud Murphy, of Wellington. Rev. Father Hurley officiated. The bride was given away by her father. She was attended by her sister, Miss Veneita Murphy. Mr. A. P. Murphy, brother of the bride, acted as best man. Mr. and Mrs. Doyle left in the afternoon for their home. - Mr. T. Quinlivan, depot agent at Wellington for the . State Coal Department, has been transferred to Dunedin, his place being taken by Mr. F. J. Gunn, of Dunedin. Before leaving, Mr. Quinlivan was presented" by the staff with a rug, an umbrella, and a travelling case. In making the presentation the general manager (Mr. W. C. Gasquoine) expressed his regret at losing one who during the six years he had been in the department had carried out his duties in a thoroughly capable and satisfactory manner. j Mr. Quinlivan will be greatly missed in Catholic circles here. After a most successful run for ten days the All Nations Fair, which had been held in St. Anne's Hall,/ concluded on Wednesday evening last. Among those/* present were the Ven. Archdeacon Devoy, the Rev'. Fathers Herring, Daly, ' and'Peoples, and Messrs. B. Doherty, M. J. Rear don, and J. E. Fitzgerald. The feature of the evening's entertainment was the Maypole dance, under the supervision of Miss Doris Guise. Mr. F. L. Dean's orchestra also added considerably to the evening's enjoyment. As a result of the carnival, the Sisters of Mercy are expected to benefit to the extent of over £3OO. Great credit is due to the hard-working committee of ladies and gentlemen, headed by the Ven. Archdeacon Devoy, for the successful result attained.
