In Germany spiritual retreats are. held for recruits or young soldiers. The idea was put forward in 1905 by Lieutenant-Colonel D. E. Hasse, who, during his long military career, had seen' the great dangers to which young soldiers are exposed in the barracks unless they get a direct' and special preparation for the new life and new conditions into which they are suddenly thrown. When it is borne in mind that there are every year from seventy to a hundred thousand young Catholic men who leave their homes to spend at least two years -in the barracks, one easily understands the heed of such a preparation.
