GRAINS OF GOLD
TO-DAY. Lord for to-morrow and its needs I do not pray; Keep me, my God, from stain of sin Just for to-day. Lot me both diligently work And duly pray ; Let me be kind in word ard deed Just for to-day. Let me lie slow to do my will, Prompt to obey; Help me to mortify my flesh Just for to-day. Lot mo no wrong or idle word, Unthinking, say; Set Thou a seal upon my lips Just for to-day. Let me in season, Lord, be gravo, In season gay ; Let me be faithful to Thy grace Just for to-day. And if to-day my tide of life Should ebb away, Give me Thy Sacraments divine, . Sweet Lord, to-day. In Purgatory's cleansing fires, Brief fee my stay; O bid me, if to-day I die, Go home to-day. Age and youth look upon life from the opposite ends of a telescope: it is exceedingly short— it is exceedingly long. Prejudices are notions or opinions Avhich the mind entertains without knowing the grounds and reasons' for them. The human race is divided into two great classes— - those who go ahead and do something, and those who sit still and inquire, 'Why wasn't it done the other -way?' - - - Prejudices arejike the knots in the glass in our window: they alter the shape of everything we choose to look at through them; they make straight things crooked, and everything indistinct. - " ----- ; It is a good -thing to believe, it is a good thing to admire. By continually looking upward, our minds will themselves grow upward; and as a man, by indulging in habits of scorn and contempt for others, is sure to descend ' to the level of what he despises, so the opposite habits -of admiration and enthusiastic reverence for excellence impart to ourselves a portion of the qualities we admire.— Matthew Arnold.
