The parish schools in the city and suburbs re-,opened en Monday, and St. Dominic's College on Tuesday. The Provincial Ecclesiastical Seminary, Holy "Cross College, Mosgiel, re-opens on February 16, and students are requested to be promptly in attendance on that date. The annual retreat of the clergy of the diocese will open at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, on Monday evening. The annual Synod takes place on the following Friday morning. The folowing students of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, passed both the matriculation and Solicitors' General Knowledge examinations: Frank Delargy; Thomas Hanrahan, Daniel McLaughlin, and James Falconer. The annual picnic of the children attending the Catholic schools of the city, suburbs, and Port Chalmers took place at Outram on Wednesday, where they were conveyed in a train consisting of seventeen carriages. They were accompanied by the clergy of the city and suburbs, the Christian Brothers, and a large number of parents and friends. The following is a list of successful candidates from St. Dominic's College at the University and Civil Service examinations: — Helen McKenzie, by passing the University Junior Scholarship French examination, has completed her medical preliminary. Matriculation — Hannah Bourke. Civil Service Junior — Pass with credit, Hannah Bourke; pass, Madeline . Pryce Helps, Johanna O'Leary, Hazel Tighe Umbers. Whilst congratulating Mr. D. S. Columb on his promotion to the Wellington branch of the A.M.P. Society, we nevertheless regret that it necessitates his departure from Dunedin. Mr. Columb was an active member of St. Joseph's Club, and took a deep interest in its progress. As captain of the Hibernian Cadets he endeared himself to all, and during the past two yearjg under his able captaincy the corps has reached a high state of efficiency. On Tuesday evening he was the recipient of a presentation and address at the hands of the members of the corps. We wish Mr. Columb every success in his new position, and hope that his sojourn in Wellington may be a very happy one.
The following are the successes of the pupils of the Christian Brothers' School at the recent .University and Civil Sorvice examinations: — Matriculation and Solicitor's General KnoAvledge — Patrick John Collins, Edward B. M. Walmsley, George Douglas Wakelin. Junior Civil Service — Passed with credit, E. B. M. Walmsley, George Douglas Wakelin. Passed — James Patrick Monaghan, Patrick John Collins, James Fogarty, John Moroney, Thomas Fitzgorald. Master E. B. M. Walmsley comes 12th on a list of 896 candidates Avho Avere successful in passing the examination. This is very creditable Avhen we consider that Master E. B. M. Walmsley was just the prescribed age, and that the examination is competitive and open to all betAA'een 15 and 21 years of age.
On_ Thursday of last , AA'eek, at the invitation of his Lordship the Bishop, about 70 children of St. Vincent's Orphanage, South Dunedin, were conveyed in drags to Holy Cross College, Mosgiel. The day was an ideal one for an outing, and tho merry little picnickers, Avho eagerly .look forAvard to this annual treat so kindly ~ provided for them by Irs Lordship, spent a most enjoyable time. On Friday, through the kindness of Mesrs. J. F. M. Fraser and Stark, of the Otago Motor Association, the children of the Orphanage enjoyed a treat which AA'as a complete departure from the ordinary style of picnics, namely a motor excursion to Portobello. The Aveather Avas not all that could bo desired, but OAving to the excellence of the arrangements, little or no inconvenience was' caused by tho rain which fell at intervals. The children journoyed by tram to Rattray street, Avhero motor-cars wore in readiness. Rev. Father Coffey, Adin., accompanied the excursionists. On arriving at Portobello tho party adjourned to tho school, whore refreshments wore dispensed, after Avhich they returned to St. Vincent's thoroughly delighted Avith their novel outing. Messrs. Fraser and Stark not only provided tho motors and tram tickets, but also sent a liberal supply of sweets to the school for tho children.
Tlic half-yoarly meeting of tho Dunodin branch of tbe Hibornian Society was well attended, when the following officers were installed for the ensuing term, past president Bro. W. Butler acting as installing officer : — President, Bro. J. Saunders (re-elected);, vice-president, Bro. W. Duggan (re-elected); secretary, Bro. J. O'Connor (re-elec-ted) ; treasurer, Bro. J. Casey (rc-clcctcd) ; wsyden, Bro. C. Flaimery; guardian, Bro. G. A. Sutherland; sick visitors, Bros. Jas. Dechan, Thos. Boyle, and Wm. Dunford (re-elected). The balance sheet for the quarter was read and adopted. Auditor Bro. D. S. Columb spoke in com-, plimentary terms of the satisfactory state of the balance sheet. He said that there was a considerable reduction in the sick pay as compared with the previous quarter, and expressed the hope that the reduction would still further continue both for the sake of the branch and the members themselves. To show the amount of good the branch is doing in Dunedin and suburbs it is only necessary to mention a few items. The money paid for sick pay to members during the year 1908 Avas £393 11s Bd, and the amount paid for medical attendance and medicine for the same period Avas £254 3s 6d, or a total of £647 15s 2d. The number of members on the roll at the end of tbe year was 281, and, considering the number of Catholic young men in the district, there should be no difficulty in bringing the total up to 400 during the present year. It is to be regretted that Bro. D. S. Columb has been compelled to- resign his position as auditor OAving to his removal to Wellington. Bro. Columb Avas an able, efficient, and painstaking auditor, ahvays going thoroughly into the. various branch accounts, and leaving nothing undone. It is satisfactory to know that there are tAvo able aspirants for the office, Bros. J. S. Columb and D. J. Corcoran. Tho olection takes place on Folbruary 9.
