- - (From Our Own Correspondents) On Thursday evening the Hibernians at South Wellington held a very successful social gathering in Victoria Hall. The Redemptorist Fathers will begin a mission in the Thorndon parish on October 18. "The mission will be conducted by Very Rev. Father Clune, and Rev. Fathers Lowham and MacDermott: The annual,concert in aid of the Home of Compassion took place in the Town Hall on Monday evening. A splendid concert programme was arranged by Mr. Robert Parker for the occasion. The hall was well filled by a large and representative gathering. Quite a considerable sumwas realised by the sale of sweets before the concert "and during, the interval.- The press during the week contained very appreciative references to the splendid work bein* undertaken by Mother Aubert and her devoted Sisters! A pleasing feature of the gathering was the' part played by the Catholic Young Men in attending to the convenience of patrons by acting as ushers. ' The monthly meeting of the men's Branch of the Sacred Heart Society, South Wellington, took' place on Sunday evening. Some very timely and - practical' remarks on Socialism were delivered -by" Rev. Father— Herring. He urged the members of the society to be on their guard against the dangers of Socialism, whose acknowledged leaders had already pronounced themselves as hostile to religion. While .they had to admit the evils of present-day society,- the remedy was not to be found in Socialism as advocated by many people here and' elsewhere. As~Catholics they shotfTd look for the amelioration of present conditions to that 'restoration of all things in 'Christ' which our Holy Father regarded as the great need of the world at the present time. A successful social was held in the Drill Hall, 4 Lower Hutt, on Tuesday evening in aid of the local Catholic Church. There was a crowded house. The members of the Christian Doctrine Society held a pleasant euchre social at Cliff House; Island Bay, on Wednesday. There were about fifty jpresent.The annual concert of the Wellington CathoiiY Club was held in St. Patrick's Hall last night (Thursday), When there werejabout 100 members and friendspresent.* Vocal items were contributed b> Misses Davis and Jones, and Messrs. Eller, .Falvey, Healy, Hickmott, and Lambert. Instrumental items were given by Misses Ruby McDonald (violin), Packer, and Warmington. __ Mr. Laurenson, in his musical monologue, created much laughter. Miss Casey acted as accompanist. The programme concluded with a farce by the members of the club, entitled ' The Same One ' the characters being taken by Messrs. Amodeo, Eller Hickmott, McGrath, and Tiller. _ ' -
