It is singular enough that the oldest known printed recipe " for making common sealing wax, published at Augsburg in 1579 describes the use of almost the same ingredients as those :,t present employed. Resin, the whitest that can be obtainedVenice turpentine and vermillion are the components. For black wax, lampblack is to be added; for blue wax, smalt, and for yellow, orpiment. When sealing wax was more widely used than is the case at present, scented wax was an article frequently on sale at fancy stationers.
