(From our own correspondent.) ' , : August jo. The ladies of the parish are very busy working for the bazaar which is" to take place next "April. ' '- The Marist Brothers' School is now almost completed, and Rev. Father Goggan announced on Sunday that he would communicate with his Grace the Archbishop on his arrival in Auckland for the purpose of making arrangements for the opening of the school^ which will most likely take place about the first , Sunday in September. The Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, of the Meanee Seminary, has been very busy in the Observatory of late, end has secured some very fine photographs of spots on the sun. Some, of' the spots, lie states, are .visible with the naked eye through a piece of smoked glass. Altogether there are four groups of spots, and are 2000 million square miles in extent. The Catholic Club Debating Society held its weekly meeting in the elubroom on August 6, the subject for debate bei.i;* ' Shoiild, the. Borough Council take over the recreation ground for (he purpose of building workmen's homes thereon?' Mr. T. Liddle was leader for the affirmative side, while Mr. J. \V. Coe took charge of the negative. The debate was a particularly good one, and at its conclusion the chairman (Mr. R. P. Clarkson, M.A.) awarded the honors to the affirmative side. During the evening Mr. B. f J. Dolan, a recent arrival here from Masterton, # was present, and was elected vice-president. ' Has New Zealand any cause to fear an invasion by th^ Japanese?' was the subject set down for debate by the Catholic Young Men's Club on the evening of August 13. The leaders of the negative and affirmative sides were Messrs. Doyle -and P. Cunningham respectively. It was an excellent debate, ant! members are showing signs of great improvement. The president (Mr. Clarkson, M.A.) stated at the conclusion of the debate thac on the arguments brought forward on the affirmative side ho would have to award them, the victory, although the speech of the leader of the negative side was most creditable.
