St. G. Douglas), in making the presentation, referred to the recipient's 18 years' connection with the office, and on behalf of the staff congratulated him very hearttly on his well-merfr-11 ' 11 ' allthe res Ponsible offices he had held— head of the Money Order Department, chief clerk and acting postmaster— Mr. Ward had ever disnlaved marked ability, and had always discharged his dSSSS a conscientious' manner. They" accordingly regretted the departure of their comrade from amongst them. lie -was always kindly and courteous, both as a superior •officer and man. He (Mr. Douglas) had to acknow-
ledge the ready assistance ard loyal support he had received from Mr. Ward. Tfaear relations had been of the pleasantest during the time they had been associated. On behalf of the staff, he hoped Mr. Ward and his family would find Palmerstoni North exceeded their - most sanguine expectations. There had been no canvass made of country officers, but he would like, to read a letter he had received from the Naseby postmaster " enclosing a contribution towards the presentation fund. Ihe letter stated that the wi'iter regretted the removal of so kind a friemd and courteous an officer (loud applause). Messrs. W. F. Cuthbertson (dead letter department), C. G. O. Naumann (Money Order and Savings Bank) A. J. L. Scott (letter carriers'), W. H. Ferens (mail room), Bernard J. Finnegan (parcels), and C. H Burton (assistant postmaster) also spoke briefly, each on bteihalf of bis respective department, referring to the cordial relations that had existed between Mr. Ward ajnd themselves, a/yd the respect in which he w/as fteM as a member of the Dunedin Post Office staff. Mr. Ward thanked them for the present they had made Mir., and assured them, it needed nothing of that nature to 'help him keep in mind the members of the Domedin staff. He had been. many years amongst them, and had seen many of them grow from lads into experienced men, and while in the Duraedin office he had made many warm and valued friends. Three hearty cheers were then given for Mr." and" Mrs. Ward, and the proceedings terminated with the singing of ( For he's a jolly good fellow.'
