' Undenominational '
Professor Ziegler, of the Strassburg University, says in his Paedagogik ' ( General . Pedagogy ') : ' An undenominational instruction in religion, which is advocated by some, is nonsense ; for every religion is denominational.' In Switzerland recently" the fuzzy Thing took shape — ' If shape it might be call'd that shape hath none,.' The idea was to set aside the present denominational system, and to pavethe way, to a purely godless scheme of public instruction. Protestants, however, joined forces' with Uatholics under the banner 'God .in the schools ! ' The proposal was solidly defeated on an appeal to the people by 318,139 votes to 172,010. It was (says ..an exchange) ' the largest poll ever recorded on an appeal to the country '. So far as Switzerland is oon--cerned, this is, for many years at least, the end of the ' undenominajtionalism ' which an agnostic member of the London School Board described in the ' Fortnightly Review ' for May, 189G, as ' a miss-hanem bea-st ', ' a moral monster ', a r lifeless, boiled-niown, mechanical, unreal teaching of religion \
