His Grace the Archbishop of . Wellington enters on his 69th year, on April 8. - "- April 25- will be the 32nd , birthday of Signor Marconi, . of wireless telegraphy fame. Mr. . Charles .Santley, whose golden jubilee as a singer it is proposed, to celebrate. -this year, 'has entered on his 73rd year. Rev. Father Sherman, the son of the late General Sherman, of" the United States Army,, made a hit at question time in a lecture recently . to non-Catholics At Lincoln, Nebraska. In answer to a question regarding Christian Science, Father Sherman .said its relation to Christianity and science was like the genealogy of the guinea-pig, ' which was neither guinea . nor pig. Mr. Justice Real, of Queensland, has just attainhis 60th year! At the age of 21 years he formed thei idea of becoming a barrister, the Rev. Father J. B. Breen being his tutor in Latin and Greek, while he 'depended solely on himself to acquire the requisite knowledge of law from the various text-books and standard works. He (was admitted to the -Bar in 1874, and elevated to the Supreme Court Bench ' sixteen years later. " A cable message; received last week stated that Dr. Maonamara, M.P., who recently became Secretary of the Local Government Board, at 'the St. Patrick's Day celebration' at '-Pecktoam (South London), was admitted a member of the Dulwich -Napper Tandy branch of the Irish National League of Grea-t Britain. This is the first instance of a member of the Ministry joining a militant Irish organisation. Dr. Macnatnara's • father was a native of^County Clare, and Dr. Macnamara, who ' is very proud of his Irish blood, has given his \Ula in Herne Hill,- London, the historic Irish naane of L lontarf . . - In connection with the recent elections, in Germany . and the leading part which the Imperial Chancellor took in the contest, it is interesting to know that Prince Von Bulow is one of the best decorated men in Europe. 'He possesses 115 stars, orders, and ribbons, besides medals galore. A German mathematician - the other day reckoned that if the Chancellor wore them all they would cover not only every^ inch of' his breast, but Ms back as well, and overflow down his trousers to his knees. But the Prince- is the least military-minded of men ; he is -well dressed and carefully groomed, but careless in "bearing. He dislikes exercise of all kinds »; he will not walk when he can ride ; he -hates the discomforts of life, and in domestic tastes is luxurious almost to the verge of ' epi- • curianism. Mr. Reginald McKenna, who recently entered the Cabinet (says the Dublin ' Freeman's Journal" 5 ), i& tfte"" son of an Irishman, the late Mr. William C. McKenna, who was a brother of Sir Joseph Neale MdKtenna, who' in the last generation had a noted Parliamentary career. Sir Joseuh Neale McKenna entered the House of Commons in 1865 as Tory member for Youghal, a constituency, from which he ousted Isaac Butt, who had sat for Youghal since 1852. Sir Joseph McKenraa, however, strange to relate, became a convert from Toryism" to Irish National princiDles, which caused Mm the loss .of his seat at Youghal, for which,'however, lie was eventually .'returned in 1874 as one 1 of 1 Isaac Butt's most sincere and earnest followers. 'He sat for Youghal till 'its disfranchisement in 1885, on the passing of the last Reform Act, arid subsequently from 1885 .till 1892 was member for Sciuth Monaghan. The death of Colonel David La Touche Coltihurst, at the advanced age of 79, which has occurred at Bournemouth (says the ' Irish Catholic '), removes a distinguished officer who saw service in the Crimea, and who was* a member of Mr. Butt's Home Rule Party. He contested one cf the -County Cork Parliamentary' divisions in the Nationalist interest against his nephew, Sir George Colthunst, Bart., who, represented the Conservative side, In 1879, and won the seat by a large majority. He was subsequently returned at the . general election of 1880. Colonel Colthurst was a fervent convert to Catholicity, as was his -brother , Robert, who long predeceased him,,- and who also served as an officer in the 'Crimean war: It is said that the conversion of the brothers was Wrought ..about by what they saw on the battlefields of the devotion of the Catholic nuns.
