Wellington, March 11.— The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Oomtmassioner, dated' London, 9th inst. r — Mutton. — The market is dull and declining. There is - a scarcity of prime mutton. Good Australian and River* Plate carcases are being offered at reduced prices. The following are current quotations : — Canterbury, 4|d ; North Island, 3|d ; River Plate, 3|d per Ib. The supply of Australian mutton exceeds the "demand, and is quoted at 3|d per - Ib. Lamb.— The market is very dull, and is becoming more depressed, on account of heavy arrivals and the large shipments afloat. Canterbury lamib is quoted at 5d ; other than Canterbury brands, 4|d ; Australian, 4d per Ifc. Beef. — The market is qiuiet, but there is a fajr demand far better grades. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3Jd, and fores at 2|-d per lb. Butter.— The market is somewhat steadier, although large supplies are coming forwards— B2o,ooo boxes of colonial butter are expected to arrive by the end of the monith. Last month 232,518 boxes' were received as against 279,232 for the corresponding period of last year. Choice New Zealand brands are quoted at 99s ; Australian, 97s , Argentine, 99s ; and Danish Ills per cwt. Cheese.— Th© market is quiet, and prifces are slightly weaker. New Zealand cheese is quoted at 65s 6d per cwt. Hemp. — The market is quiet, and rather unsettled, although moderate business is doing. Good fair grade, on the spot, is quoted at £38, April to June shipments at £3? 10s ; fair current Manila, on spot, £40. Eggs, Is 3d per dozen. Bacon, lOd. Hams, "lOd. Flour— 200fts, 20s. Oatmeal— solbs, 8s ; 251b's, 4s 3d 1 . Pollard, 9s 6d. Bran, ss. Chaff, " 2s 6d. Potatoes, 6s per cwt. Messrs. Stronach, Morris, and Co. report :— Oats.— Tibere is a good demand for all on offer, , and Quotations, which are as follow, are well maintained:—Prime millinc, 2s 7d to 2s 7£d ; inferior to medium., 2s 4£fl to 2s v s£d per bushel. Wheat.— The market is firm at late quotations, which are as follow : -Prime milling, 3s 4Jd to 3s 5d ; whole fowl wheat, 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; broken and damaged, 3s to 3s 2d per bushel. Potatoes.— Supplies are plentiful, and quotations are as follow : Best, £4 15s to £5 ; medium to good, £<L to £4 12s 6d ; inferior, £3 10s to £3 17s 6d ; straw Chaff. — There is a good demand for prime quality, • and quotations are as follows : Best oaten sheaf 5 £4 15s to £5 ; medium to good, £4 to £4 12s 6'd ; inferior, £3 10s to £3 17s 6d ; straw chaff, £3 5s to £3 10s per ton.

Quotations : Prime .milling, '3s 4£d to 3s 5d ; whole fowl wheat, 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; broken, and damaged, 3s ■ to 3s '2d per bushel (sacks extra). • Potatoes.— The market has been over-supplied with consignments in unripe condition. These will not keep, and in many cases have to be sold at a reduction in market rates" in order to effect a clearance. For soun/d, ripe potatoes, freshly dug, there is fair demand. Quotations : Best, £4 15s to £5 ; medium tci good " £4 to £4 10s per ton (bags included). 'CSiaff.— Supplies are not quite so heavy, and for' all p r ime light oaten sheaf there is ready sale. Medium and discolored lots have not the same attention, . and'it is still too early to deal satisfactorily with in- , ferior lines. Straw.— Good bright oaten and .wheat straw -is. in strong demand. At present almost- the only "straw offering is of medium* or inferior quality.
