Wellington, March 4.— The Department of Industries " and Commerce has received the following cable" froni' the -High, Commissioner, da-ted London, March -2:—T he mutton market is weak, as,- "a result of heavy arrivals and a poor demand continuing. Canterbury brands, 4£d ; .North Island, 4d ; Krver Plate,- 3fd per lb. The lamb merket is dull ; the supply exceeds demands. 5d per ft. There is a better demand for beef, which * Canterbury, s|id ; and other than Canterbury brands,, it quoted at. 3§d ,and " 2fd per lb for hind and" forequarters respectively. A better demand is noted ~ for butter. The market is steady at present. Supplies, however, exceed requirements. « The following are current quotations :— Choice New Zealand, 99s ; Argentine, 99s ; Australian, 97 ; Danish, 113s per cwt. 'The' New ' Zealand cheese market is qmiet but firm at 66s per cwt, The hemp market is iquiet but steady. Good fair grade on the spot, £39 ;~ and. fair current Manila on the spot, £40 per ton. There is a better demand for cocksfoot seed.. Pollard, 9s 6d. Bran, ss.- Chaff, 2s Gd. Potatoes, 7s per cwt. Messrs. Donald Reid and Co. . (Ltd.) report :— * We held our* weekly auction sale of" grain and produce at cur stores on Monday. There was a moderate attendance of buyers, but bidding was not brisk, and several lots- of potatoes and chaff had to be passed in, competition not coming up to our valuations. Prices ruled as under :— Oats. — Samples of lh,e new_ season's crop are now " coining to hand. For all good to prime lots there is strong demand at prices fairly equal to- late quotations. Only limited consignments are coming in, and " these are readily taken on arrival. Dun oats are still wanted for autumn sowing. Quotations : Prime milling, 2s 6£d to 2s .7d , good to best feed, 2s s^d to 6£d ; inferior to medium, 2s '3d to 2s 5d per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat.— A considerable quantity of southern wheat has suffered to some extent by the late wet ' weather. Prime, milling quality is in good demand locally, but medium samples have not the same attention, and are only saleable as fowl s wheat. Values the latter are, however, little below milling -quotations! Quota-" tions : Prime milling, 3s 4£d to 3s 5d ; medium do. 3s 4<d; whole fowl wheat, 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; broken' and damaged, 3s "to 3s 2d per bushel' (sacks extra).. Potatoes.— The market has "been more heavily supplied durwig the past week, and ' all sorts are sale- - able only at a reduction on late values. Many consignments arc too green to keep, and these have, tci dealt with at' once. Quotations : Best oaten sheaf, £4 15s to L «BS ; medium, £4 5s to £4 10s : light, and inferior, £3 10s to £4 ; straw chaff, £3 5s to £3 10s per ton (bags extra). * - Pressed Straw.— This is in 'short supply, and meets good infqjuiry. Quotations : Oaben, 60s ; wheaten, 55s to 60s per ton. Messrs. Stronach, Morris, and Co. report :— Oats.— There is a good inquiry for new: season's samples* which are now beginning to -come to, hand.
